converting an E to an F (89 to a gs500f....)

ok I searched.. and couldn't find my old thread about this...




What all is involved?  Is it possible to buy just the front fairings/brackets/headlight and it bolt on?  Is it required to replace the tank and rears?

What kind of modifications are required for the 01+ seat/rear plastics? tank?

if you have a 89...it's not really worth it...

The F has a bracket welded to the neck that supports the front end of the fairing.  Then there are a few points ont the downtubes of the frame where the fairing bolts to as well.

I think I have it worked out...

Here's what you do...

1. Run an add in the Paper/ Ebay/ On here and sell the 89 .

2. Search your local paper/ On Ebay Etc/ On here / your local dealer for an F Model.

3. Buy the F model using the 89's money as a down payment...


Just teasing a little ( but just a little ).  I'd look for an Aftermarket body kit  for it if you have to have a fairing... Most use a round headlight tho...ick.


You could probably get the main bodywork to fit from an F (Upper/headlight  /lowers  etc) without too much of a headache..  

If you want to change the gas tank seat and tails that's where your main problem would be. The subframe/ gas tank mount are different ( Pretty sure but I don't have an F sitting here to compare to).... You don't have to change the tank and tail to make it fit...(At least I don't think  you would have to..)

OK I was hoping such madness will not come to this site but ... well too late ... I guess I met the guy that did this albeit before he fully did it, and I met se7enty7 before the other guy did it so I can only assume I am a carrier in reverse time ...
Anyway Upper fairing doesn't neccesarily need a weded on lip on the steering neck ... you can use a muffler clamp and a flat bar ... dont even ask how I know this ... Yea yea I made the freaking thing ... whihc in itself was not hard at all ... but the whole rest of the package ... whew ... anyway the whole F setup will bolt on to the E and look nice ... of course the tail and tank are a shade different but Big deal ... its not bad ... Anyway FWIW I think the aluzio kit is better and looks nicer ... and heck its in your neighborhood se7enty7 ... email nicebelair and ask him for more pics or drive there one day and look at it and check all the details out ...

$350 is good, and you dont have to paint those, you'll paint yours I think ... of hell no ... you're painting over nice white bodywork ... dammit ... Could you buy some other ghaslty purple or somehitng and paint it and sell me that white ... Hey if you sell me the white ... I'll give you a set of sidecovers ... yea they're greel or teal or whatever they want to call it ... but you're painting so doesn't matter ... no tank ... or atleast not one undented one ...

OK that 89 white isn't the same as the white that's in the 04 fairing ... done a side by side ... the 89 has more pearl and more metallic flakes in it, and the color itself sorta ages into a goldenish color ... the 04 I dont think will do that ... and more annoying is the fact that my 91 blue doesn't match the 04 blue either ... either way somehting is getting painted ... if you like that white you'd prolly wanna keep it in a box ... trust me nothing matches ... I believe the only match from the 04 to the 89-00 is that 97-98-99 yellow whihc is the same as 04 yellow ... probably. All the rest are not ...

carbs are great.... my pipe got... louder... somehow... I don't care.  If the neighbors complain maybe they should get a house in the counry... lol...

I don't get the tank and rear plastics in the deal... that's $550+shipping for ALL plastics.... I was gonna use my white ones...

Ok $350 for the front aka full fairing and the tail alone is 200 more ... or does it include tank ... anyway the tank and tail will need more work than is worth ... mainly the tail light wont match, the side tabs will need new welded mounts made up etc ...  lots of welding tabs and trial and error ... and tank will be pretty much bolt in of course need the 01+ seat ... anyway ... 350 for fairing sounds good, just buy tank and tail pieces (I got some shitty mismatched tail pieces I'll be glad to part with for $10-20 a piece depending on shape ... as in even the best one structurally is $20 ... anyway ... ) save the white body ... just in case ... anyway if you want a 04 fairing to fit I can make you that same muffler clamp based masterpiece I did for my friend here ... $20 should cover it ... and you can drill the needed holes and trim it with a dremel and its main Advantage ... totally reversible if you change your mind at some point in the future.

PIpe getting louder is sorta an illusion ... your bike will go through the revs quicker ... so your sound progression is smoother and its sorta very spin crazy ... but say at 6K rpm you prolly made the same amount of noise as before ... but you went from 4K say to 6K much quicker after getting carbs sorted right that its now louder seeming ... Yea screw the neighbors ...
