Quote from: weaselnozethis must be an everyday thing for many bikers.  notice how many other bikes were doing the same exact thing.  is this legal anywhere??  i cant imagine that it is but the people in the cars dont seem to mind and im sure they see it everyday!

Some do mind.  They get very animated, like they want to jump out of their seat.  It's not legal anywhere on the east coast, but you gotta do what you gotta do.  That's the point of having a bike.  I get free parking, tolls and gas paid by my company if I take the cage.  It costs me money to commute on the bike.  I would have to be an idiot to sit in traffic.

People are use to it here.
Even the CHiPs do it during rush hour and they will yell at drivers hogging the line.
The rule is, you are not suppose split lanes at more than 10mph faster than the flow of traffic.

Yup. I do this everyday getting to school and back.  People are used to it here (most of them!) so it's not that bad. Although last week I did have one guy pull to the far left of his lane so I couldn't get by.....or so he thought.

Interesting.

That would never work here in central OH without some intense education of the public. :guns:

Notice the cars in the left lane pretty much hugged the left line.  Drivers in the center lanes mostly stayed centered.

Wouldn't it be nice if the highway designers incorporated a bike lane?

Anybody ever hear of  that ?

here's the HOV lane.  buses, carpoolers (at least 2 people) and cycles...

gotta watch out for people passing people in the fast lane by using the HOV... and cops...

That's it.  I'm lane splitting from now on.

Here in fla if the cops didnt rough you up for it, the public would. they even like opening doors to try to stop you.

BTW what part of US was that ... the roads looked too empty really. But the large number of bridges and over passes etc indicate some thickly populated area.

Check out the drivers movements, very jerky.  I think they jacked up the playback speed to make it look faster that it really was. :guns:

Don't kid yourself!!!  Yeah everyone does it, and yeah it's legal, but one day a twitchy driver is going to change lanes really quick and you're toast.

Even as a biker, when driving my car I'm rarely aware of motorcycles splitting my lane until they're right next to me.  At that point it's too late for the biker if I'm lazy and don't look over my shoulder before switching lanes.   This is actually one of my biggest fears when caging.

Have patience!  Look forward to a long life of motorbiking!

again...

that'd work like.. once.. here in atlanta... until he's on 285 or 75 and traffic is just STOPPED out of NOWHERE.  You can be going the speed limit, paying FULL attention and still nearly hit someone.

Ya it's "legal", if you do it at "a safe speed", and you "signal before changing lanes".  I have seen guys get tickets for both.  It all depends on the cop.  Some cops hate the lane sharing thing, so I think they are on a mission to screw with bikers.  I have actually split lanes behind a CHP guy on a BMW bike for several miles.  He broke all the "laws" too.  It was quite fun.  I used to commute to Sorrento Valley from Rancho Bernardo, so basically every day was like that video.  I was concentrating so hard that I didn't breathe for 14 miles.  When you are going that fast, it's like playing Quake 3 for real.  You have to be aware of everything.  Nobody signals, cause noone would let them over if they did, so they just gun it and swerve.  You can tell if someone's gonna switch lanes by looking at their eyes in their side mirror.  So basically, you gotta scan side mirrors on both sides of you while going 40-50 mph.  Speaking of side mirrors, I think I have only hit 3 so far.  1 on purpose.  It's a rush!

My brother-in-law was telling me he saw a guy on a bike splitting in NYC across a bridge (no clue which one) where traffic was stopped. This guy in a car tried to cut the biker off, and he barely made it though. what happened next is priceless.

the guy stops his bike, gets off, and walks back to the guy in the car. He then reaches in the car and starts fighting with the guy over something. the guy's wife is screaming at him and the biker TAKES THE CAGER'S KEYS OUT OF THE IGNITION AND THROWS THEM OFF THE BRIDGE!! :o

He then calmly proceeded to walk back to his bike and rode away through the cars.

THAT is just desserts.

Here's one that made me nervous just watching it.

http://www.sportbikez.net/video/5

It's narrated in German so I have no idea what is said.  But the guy is splitting lanes at 200kph-250kph (124mph-155mph)!  A couple of close calls also.
Proper riding gear is nowhere near as constricting as a wheelchair or a coffin.

mrblink

I was riding behind a guy on a CBR600 once, and we came up to a tight spot we couldn't get through (traffic was stopped).  Basically, this dude in a big-ass Suburban was over too far, and the guy on the CBR asked him very nicely if he could move over a tiny bit so we could get by.  The guy in the Suburban shook his head no, and flipped off the CBR guy, and started to cuss at the guy on the CBR.  So the guy on the bike elbowed the side mirror right off the Suburban, and we took off, laughing at the cager who was stuck in traffic.  Not as awesome as the keys off the bridge story, but I thought I'd share anyway.

And the guy on the sportbikez.net video is freaking insane.  My plams were all sweaty the whole time I was watching it.  Looked like fun though!
