I pulled my cover off and took out the ignition to send to bob but then I realized that the igniton itself is a very simple design

so I read over the HOW TO and it only took me about 10 minutes of grinding with the dremel

I had the ignition out, test fitted, little mor grinding, then back in in about a half hour

really simple process, If you have a dremel yourself and are afraid to send it to bob because you cant go without your bike then the DIY mod may be something to look into

um.. doesnt the notch in the back have to be filled in a new hole drilled??

edit:

okay after reading that... my rotor was much different that bob's.  Mine had the notched welded in, and a new one drilled, AND the actual piece that goes near the contacts was smaller and a slightly different shape...

The Buddha

He was talking about rotating the plate with the 2 pickup points counterclockwise ... yea works to make a 49 state bike into a 17 degree advance. The CA bike needs to move forward 12 degrees ... that's far too much for that method ... Or so I hear ...
BTW Paternoster - You have changed the advance but not affected the dwell. So you'll statically have 17 degrees, but you wont hit max advance and plateau off sooner ... An advancer will do both. Initial advance is more and the advance curve is steeper ... the max advance isn't altered in any of the methods ... you'll need a different black box for that.
Cool.

does my cali bike have a different black box than 49 staters?

The Buddha

No ... Just the advancer was different ... with 5 degrees static advance but the same dwell as the 49. The 49 was 12 degrees and BobB's 17 and ~30% less dwell. So I believe you'd hit the max advance ~33-3500 rpm instead of 4500.

OK you can make that projection part of the advancer smaller in length. But how much and where I have no idea ... Just that it should have less duration as it flies past the pickup points.

will sending my advancer to bob give me the advance and the dwell?
if so that is 5 bucks well spent

The Buddha

Yea ... You want the dwell reduced, you already have "Dwell" ... but Bob knows what he's doing. You'd of course have to reverse the dremeling and fit that plate back in the original position. I have actually posted this same thing a few months ago when someone asked me somehitng similar. I guess we need like a FAQ for this also.

reversing the dremeling is a matter of loosening the bolts moving the peice and retightening the bolts

wish i woulda new this earlier

The Buddha

There was someone who asked or did the same thing couple months ago and I told him the same thing. I'm all for doing all the work myself ... however Post on here before you start anything ... you know someone is going to respond pretty quick.
