I took out my tensioner tonight and everything seemed to check out ok, my question is when I put it back in I wind it up so it compresses then screw it down then let the spring put tension back on the chain.  Does this sound right for those of you that have done it?  Just dont want to have it jump off and bend some valves on my initial start up.  Any help welcome, Thanks.

clymers page 115:

17. Remove the cap from the end of the camshaft drive chain tensioner.

18. install a new gasket onto the tensioner.  Apply a light coat of grease to hold the gasket in place.

19. Insert a thin flat blade screwdriver into the tensioner and turn the tensioner clockwise to relax the tension on it.  Hold the screwdriver in this position and install the tensioner and gasket onto the cylinder block.  Push the tensioner all the way on until it bottoms out, then remove the screwdriver and install the mounting bolts. ...Install the cap onto the end of the tensioner and make sure its properly seated.

Sounds like I should be good then, Thanks.

It adjusts by itself but they have had a tendancy to go bad so I was just giving mine a checkup to make sure it was ok.  I think the usual mileage that they take a crap is around the 20-25 thousand range.

OK if you haven't opened the back plate of the tensioner and the coil spring isnt bunching up ... Then wind it while holding the clip that prevents it from retracting and insert a retaining some or other in the back ... I made one for the kawi's I have, the GS one I lost many years ago but its similar ... its like a T with a very short tail and extermely tall top Horizontal bar and it can sit in the slot and against the slots in the back plate ... and then you can let the retractor clip go ... and install it and then pull that T piece out ... and that will let the thing expand out. Of course if you have the carbs out and someone to help you can get by with a screw driver and your helper instead of that T ...
Cool.
