tach cable leak

Getting a leak again, where the tach cable enters the engine.
Replaced the little plastic washer a few thousand miles ago.  Did not last too long.  Can I just put plumbers teflon tape there and see if that stops it?
2002 GS500
2004 V-Strom 650 
is it time to check the valves?
2004 KLR250.
