I have been wearing a Vega Monterey XKV for 2 years or so, was wearing it the other day, blah, blah, blah.
here's the important part, go to the bike shop try on helmets, find one that fits then find one online, for really cheep (NO EBAY) used helmets are a russian roulete game that you don't want to play.
if the vega fits then go for it, that's all there is to it.  all the expensive brands meet the same standard, oh wait my VEGA has the same snell sticker hmmmm......

yea i know thats the best way. i wanted to get a second helmet eventually and dont feel like gettin the same ole boring black cs-12.  i never saw vega in the shop before and i was shocked to see thier prices.  am i correct in saying that the saftey isnt greater or less depending on the price of the helmet?  my friend was buying a helmet the other day and some guy was lookin at helmets too. my friend ended up getting the cheapest helmet there and the guy made some comment about how thats a dumb idea because they wont protect near as good as the 400 buck ones.

well if peace of mind for you costs 400 bucks then spend 400 bucks. for me it costs what it takes to get a snell cert. which was 140 if I whould have had to pay for the lid.

i had a vega (my first helmet).

In terms of safety they are fine, vega is known in the dirt bike industry i hear.

In anycase the HJC i have has higher quality materials,  but its noiser than the old vega that i had.

Ultimately the Vega's interior started failing. So if you plan to upgrade every year or two, 70 bucks for a safe helmet isnt bad.

I tried on a couple of helmets when I went to buy a while back. The Vega just didn't feel right. I really liked the HJC AC-11 but it didn't have all of the features I was looking for (more removable padding, more ventilation). I also heard the complaints about the noise but it wasn't something I could test in the store. I then tried the Shoei RF-1000. Fit like a charm and very feature rich so I got it and have been way more than happy with it since. For me, I didn't mind spending the extra money on a good helmet. I mean it is my head we're talking about.

I think the bottom line is everyones head is different and if it doesn't fit right, it wont be effective in a crash. Need to go out there and just try them on.

I have the Vega Nitro helmet. I had a fairly bad crash (pics at bottom) in the DOT only helmet and it held up great, saved my life. I hit really hard, I went over top-side at about 60 MPH. I was unconcious for I don't know how long, then in and out. A good semeritan stopped to help cause the other person drove off. Without the helmet, I'd have no brain now.The NITRO is DOT/SNELL.

It has great ventilation (the nitro) and visor replacements are cheap, plus it looks great; I only have good things to say about this helmet.

i had a vega a while back.  i bought it for track days in my car.  the plastic parts that hold the visor on broke the day i brought it home.  spend a little more.  your head is probably worth at least $100.

when getting a helmet shop around for one that fits your head.  They are all different.  Even the same brand helmet can have a different shape if they are a different model.  My brothers head fits an HJC CL-14 and my head fits a HJC CL-12.  His is the newer model of mine.  So make sure you know if fits before ordering.
