I got an email from my insurer a couple of days ago requesting a picture of my gs500f.  She told me that it's possible that Shelter may drop my bike if the deem it a 'crotch rocket'.  Now minus the fairing I consider my bike one  of the furthest things from a crotch rocket.

Whats even worse is that I stopped by her office this morning and we looked up a quote on a 2002 gs500e just to see if it was insurable.  According to her computer it isn't (I hope it's nothing more than a glitch).  I like shelter insurance and would really hate to switch (besides, they have the best rates).  I can't believe that, because of a few young dumb@$$es who think they can survive anything, i won't be able to insure my bike with my current insurance company.

What is your experience with Insurance Companies...if you don't mind me asking, who are you with?  Is your car and bike on the same insurance policy?

State Farm, my car and bike with them. Bike is only about $350/yr for full coverage, 33 yrs old, no wrecks.

Welcome to the world of insuring bikes. I have Allstate with my bike, truck and house. I am with the understanding that Allstate is not issueing new policies for sport bikes though, I have been with them since '87.

I keep hearing State Farm is good to motorcyclists.
Common sense in not very common.

i'm paying 1650 with statefarm  (liability + fire + theft)
wileyco, K&N pod, rejet 22.5/65/147.5, F16 flyscreen, progressive springs, 15t front sprocket...more to come: katana shock

my buddy bought a GSXR600, and after talking to my state farm agent, she said they don't care if it's a sportbike or not, they only look at the engine size. The GSXR600 was only going to be 3.00 more a month to insure for me.

Send them a picture of an unfaired GS.  Then if they ever see your bike just tell them that you had removed the fairing but put it back on and painted it.  Send them a picture of Cal Price's or Kerry's bike...one with a really big fairing.

Dom

Send them this pic.

I'm not sure how picky her listing (or computer app) was, but technically the '02 is not an 'E'.  It goes like this:
    1989-2000
GS500E

2001-2003 GS500

2004+ GS500F[/list:u]
Yellow 1999 GS500E

Mine's an E model (96). I pay about $115 a year with American Family.

Here in the Lone Star Republic, Progressive only wanted displacement ( I told them 487 in case 500 was a cutoff) For my '98 GS= $101 for the year! :)

Dude, don't even sweat it.  Check out the rates with BikeLine (Markel), hard to beat.

http://www.bike-line.com/

I only paid an extra $14/yr to switch from $500 deductibles to $250.  Full comp and collision, 50k/100k limits for $214/yr.  34 yr old, brand new rider, $2k used bike, in Los Angeles.  Doesn't include uninsured motorist though.

These guys were giving out mini-atlases at the big bike show in LA.  Pretty cool.

I insure my cars and bike through AAA (the roadside assistance people).

My 2001 gs500, fully covered cost around $350/yr.
My 2004 600rr, fully insured costs $500/yr

AAA looks at engine size formost. Make sure you tell them its 487cc not 500cc. Might bump you down one category.

And even though its not an actual sportbike Im sure the insurance looks at it in terms of how much payout it'll be if its crashed, due to the fairings.

checked into this and .... $344.00 a year for full coverage.

currently i'm running with Progressive, just liability and paying $75 a year

25 years old, no violations.

I use progressive and pay $250 a year liability. But I'm 20 so full coverage was insane. Like more than my car... more than the bike costs almost.

I haven't checked around. $250 a year was pretty acceptable for me since I pay 7 times that for liability for my car with a perfect driving record.

Yeah I am pretty sure that the GS falls into the "standard motorcycle" category. $320 a year for me with no violations.

I've been looking up quotes to get ready for warmer weather, here's what I've found. I'm 21, first bike, took the MSF, 1 minor ticket in car. I also live in Ohio, and I think we've got a law that bike insurance is less because we can't ride year-round. All prices are per year.

Progressive: $197 (with my car) or $208 (without)
Bike-Line.com: $330
Geico: $419 (Including 10% discount for MSF)

The All-State guy hasn't gotten back to me yet, but they are accepting new bike policies. State Farm would only do my bike if they did my car too, but they wanted $1800 a year just for my car so I didn't even bother asking what both would be.

weaselnoze

everyone has neglected the fact that it really matters where u live.  my sister just changed her residency to her college because she lives there the majority of the year.  its about 1.5 hrs away and it cut her insurance in half.  just because its not as populated.  i live in the suburbs and pay $600 a year.  19/m 1 wreck, 2 tix.  liablilty and comprehensive. no uninsured/underinsured protection.  a lot of u guys pay less than me for full coverage.  there are so many factors its hard to compare really.

RIP RICH! We'll miss you buddy!

Downtown Seattle, I pay $433 a year with Progressive and I have more tickets than you can shake a stick at, but not SR-22...yet! ...  I got one last week in fact for not having my license plate on the bumper...it was sitting on the dash...$101

sprint_9

Any way you put it, you always come to the same conclusion.  Insurance companies are ghey. :dunno:

Mk1inCali

Dom, that isn't just a fix-it ticket?  My buddy has a Camaro that had an aftermarket front air-dam and he always had his plate on his dash, admittedly illegal, and he just got a 10 dollar fix-it ticket for it...
