Just bought a 93 gs500e. What service should I do? 2 years.

I just bought a 93 gs500e from a friend. It has been in his garage for about 2 years untouched. Everything seems ok but the fairings are all sanded down and primered. I am gonna paint them and make it look all pretty this coming summer. Other than that what is regular procedure when getting these bikes working smooth? I was thinking of changing oil, oil filter, air filter, battery, plugs. Any other suggestions? This is my first carbureted bike so I have no idea what 2 do with it. Thanks.  :)

congrats on the new bike!  i also have a 93 that sat for a couple of years and changed out everything that you mentioned except the battery, which is still holding up ok.  the other suggestions i would make:  check the gas tank for rust.  you can do that by removing the tank and draining fuel out of the petcock.  if it's rusted, you'll want to take care of that before everything else because it will affect the carbs.  next you may want to get into the carbs to see if they're varnished or gummed up.  if you don't have a manual i would definitely suggest getting one.  it's been the best accessory to the bike i've purchased.  good luck!

Congrats on your new ride. :thumb:

Does it run? Unless the carbs were drained or the gas treated, things may be little a gummed up with varnish. On a bike that old you want to check all the rubber parts like hoses, fork seals, and tires. Make sure your drain hose is connected to the battery and draining away from the bike to prevent corrosion under the seat.
Depending on the mileage you need to check the chain and sprocket for wear and may need a valve adjustment.

Step 1: Buy a manual using the link on the main page

Step 2: Use the search function at the top, it is not very good but better than nothing.

Step 3: Anytime someone named Kerry or Srinath tells you something, pay attention!

Favorite improvement for a stock GS include:
stiffer springs for front forks and fork oil change
rejetting the carbs a little or a lot
after market exhaust for more vroom vroom

I just ordered the user manual. Im planning on getting some new tires for it also. Where can I get all the parts I need online? The cheapest way possible. I just need this bike running nice and safe. I have a gsx-r 600 2004 but this 93 will be for college. Just to get around town and stuff. cheap tires, plugs, air filter, oil etc?

Aoart from what you mentioned ... valve adjustment and carb clean ...
BTW I actually prefer carbs that have been left undrained ... but the GS carbs are rather resilient ... draining carbs makes their O rings get dry and leak ... really bad on the keihein CV and CVK's I have on my nighthawk and eliminator ... I spray carbs on the outside with wd 40 or silicone to keep O rings lubed up ...
Cool.

your new manual will give you lots of info on how to get to the carbs and take them apart.  in addition to that, you can check out the carb clean on the 'how to' section of this site.  if that doesn't satisfy your curiosity, search 'carb AND clean' on this site using the search function above.  happy hunting

I just re-read this and would like to add: change the brake fluid and the fork oil. Both of those should be replaced every two years.

I really prefer to use that Yamaha carb cleaner ... its a liquid that you mix with gas and fill your floats and let sit for 1-2 days while shaking the bike ... then drain and run a couple floats full of fresh gas and you're done ...
I typically mix ~ 6-7 OZ (2 oz cleaner and 5-6 of gas ) in a radiator overflow can, and feed it into the carbs via the petcock ... do not get it in the tank ...
Then 24 hours later ... drain it and run 2-3 floats of fresh gas ... like in the tank and put in prime and 2-3 mins later close the petcock, then sit for a min, drain the carbs ... then repeat ... 2-3 times ...
Cool.
