first of all what is this part called again?  ignition cover?  psht idk. anyway i remember reading something about how even a hairline crack in this piece can cause significant problems in the future.  was that w/ goats or something? i cant remember.  but i noticed a significant crack on the bottom right.  should i replace this asap?  if anyone has an extra i could buy lemme know!

Nah, that has little to do with goat's.  It will probably break though the next time the bike goes down on it's right.  It protects the signal rotor, and that's something you don't want to break.  You can a) ignore it and never drop the bike again, b)find a used or new one (which may also break after dropping it) or one of the machined ones from wera90ex in the FS forum(which won't break), or c) get case guards so it doesn't take the impact when it's dropped.

Like you, I have a small crack in my ignition cover.  For now I have some JB Weld backing it for my piece of mind, even though it probably won't do much.  Soon I will probably be getting case guards, and I'm on the lookout for a cheap replacement.

no it's not a problem, not even in the rain, I ran around all last spring with out one on there.  if I remember right one of the WERA guys had some made that were thicker and billet alum  or something.  if you get a new one I call YOINK on that one

That thing will not even touch the ground if you have my super duper case guards .... made especially beefy and wider than needed to keep those bits off the ground ...
Cool.

Is that the one that goes on the right side below the oil measure cap? Dude, mine came off in my crash and I've had duct tape over it for about 6 months now with no problems. When it falls off I just put a new piece on.

But the duct tape is only covering up a little dime sized hole on the right side where a little plastic disc that was like rubber cemented on got rubbed off. So I guess it's a different thing.

OK duct tape is fine as a temporary fix to get you home ... heck you can leave it open ... but do not ever drop it wihtout that cover ... ignition parts will get boogered, and if the crank threads that keep the advancer on get screwed up ... the motor is toast ...  seen a bike like that ... bad news ... 30 cent bolt killing a motor ...
Cool.

it's the alignment pin hole in the crank that gets all boogered up

If you are going to replace it, get one of these covers:

GS500/450 igntion case covers
Common sense in not very common.

it's the other side...  any kind of crack... hell you don't even need a crack... imo can cause goats.

I had goats, replaced my magnet, stator, everything... and got goats AGAIN.  I then remember the bike had been down on it's left side... thought maybe the cover was bent

bought a new cover, new magnet, new stator.. and the problem went away for good

weaselnoze

thanks for all the replies.  if i decide to replace it im gonna try and find a used oem one, if no luck then go w/ the wera cover!
