how to purchase bike oversees?

Hey all, im thinking of buy a cbr from the UK it was originally here in california, and i believe is still registered here, but was recently relocated to the uk with the owner due to work reasons.

now my question is, how can i best cover my a$$ from being burned.  Should i ask him for scanned copies of paperwork? i already asked him for the vin.

just any ideas on how to take care of myself would be great.

We have touched on the issue of "personal imports" before the general concensus was that shipping costs would outweigh any other benefits also currency exchange, if applicable, would not be great for you at the moment.

well, he would be accepting it in us dollars so that isnt in issue.  And the
seller will be paying half the shipping.  In the end i will still be saving money.

It's proly craigslist and its probably and also most definitely a scam.  Is the ad written in broken English?   I've seen these same type of relocation ads again and again.  If the dude weren't such a dumbass he wouldn't have shipped the bike to the UK and decided he didn't want it anymore....also why doesn't the Prince of Nigeria just sell it in the UK where he can get top dollar for it.  Dude, never send money overseas or else you'll never see it again.  I'll do you a favor and send you my paypal address and at least that way you'll still be out the money but you'll know it went to a good place.  

BTW, a manager oversees productions overseas.

Give us a link to the ad if you can, I'm curious to see what it says.

you didn't happen to find this bike for an extraodinarily low price on the internet did you, because this smells like a typical internet scam.

Never buy overseas unless it's from a dealer that you KNOW exists or if you have a friend over there who can check it out, buy it and then ship it to you...but for the amount of trouble and the amount  of CBR's around I am POSITIVE you can find a way better deal that is less sketchy around your area.

Oh Overseas that's easy ... ask him to deliver the bike to port of your choice with title and keys, upon seeing it, riding it whatever ... send him a check ... Paypal is OK too but they eat like 3-4% ...

yeah i know guys....i had all the similar suspicions.  the ad was in the local cycle trader. (southern california).  And dont worry, i wouldnt do this without something like www.escrow.com.

im a poor college student....i move slowly on things like this.

I would mention using an escrow company of your[/b] choice, or not paying a dime until you have received the goods and inspected them yourself... then see if you ever hear from the guy again... my money is on you never hearing back  

The situation you are describing is almost sure to be a scam.  People don't sell bikes for less than they are worth... regardless of the circumstances!

bottom line, almost all overseas sportbike transactions are scams.  Once you learn to spot them, it is mind-boggling how many are out there.

Has anybody heard of any oversea transaction that was legit? I think I read tons of posts about oversea scam and I don't really know anybody who bought a bike from oversea succesfully...

only way i would do it is through someone i personaly KNOW oversea's or Dealer oversea's.  someone i can personaly track down through public listings.
