Got my new bike!

Just got my new Yamaha R6 on the 5th! Unfortunantly, I had to trade-in my GS500... I still remember how disappointing it was to see my bike salesman take it and drive it around to the back of the dealership where I couldn't see it anymore.  Such a great bike.  On a positive note, the R6 is so amazing!  Everytime I see it, I find something new to like about it. Couldn't really be happier with it.  I'm thinking of getting an alarm for it though, but I can't decide whether it's worth it or not. An alarm doesn't guarantee the bike won't get stolen or vandelized. I might hear the alarm, run outside, and find my bike tipped over or something.  Anyway, an alarm would cost me ~$500 and my insurance deductible is $500 so... I dunno.

Hey Congrats!  I'm *really* hoping when you get a chance you could give us some feedback on how it feels going from the GS to R6.  When the time is right, I'll probably make the same exact move.  I have the R6 homepage burned into my monitor

I have to park it right outside my house.  I don't think it's too bad right now cause I also got a cover.  I'm hoping that will keep it out of sight and out of mind, not to mention less weathered.

As for the change over, so far it's not bad at all.  I was expecting it to be way less comfortable but it's a lot more upright than I thought it would be.  It's also much easier to lean forward and less awkward than the GS.  As with most other bikes, it has twice the turning radius of a GS.  If you ever carry a passenger, it's nicer for them cause they can see over your head, nicer for you cause they can't slide into your seat space, and nicer for you cause it's easier for them to hold on to you than the seat strap    (as opposed to the bar).

Other than that, the power/acceleration is absolutely amazing! I'm still breaking the engine in (so no going over ~6000 / 15500 redline) and I can still spin the tire w/o even trying.  Today I took it for a ride with a passenger and really pushed it within that engine speed boundry and I still found it hard to hold on while shifting from 1st to 2nd.

The bike is also a lot more "high tech"; it's easier to start (no choke) and the digital display is wicked.  Instead of messing with a reserve tank, a fuel light goes on when I've got 3.5L of gas left and it even automatically displays a fuel trip meter to show how far I've gone since the fuel light turned on.

Nice looking bike.  I'm going to do a couple track days on my GS500, then move up to a bigger bike.  I'd definitely look for a good way to secure it, though.  One guy down here bought a brand new liter bike, and it was stolen the same night he brought it home.  He didn't even have insurance on it yet, so he's stuck making payments on a bike he doesn't even own anymore.

I'm surprised you let the fairing get dirty.    Hope your gear isn't black -- doesn't make you very conspicuous in traffic.

Hope you respect the difference in power between old & new rides.  You've almost tripled the HP of your old GS500.  A sweet ride, but one that deserves respect.  Enjoy the ride...

PS. Watch out for the pea gravel & sand on the roads.  It'll be a few more weeks yet before it gets swept up in Edmonton.

You park it outside? Say goodbye now. Cover or not, eventually it will be taken. Yeah, insurance is great but you make a claim for theft and they'll drop you if it happens again.

Someone tried to get my 600rr from my carport, covered, cabled and bikebraced (www.bikebrace.com). Brace is only thing that prevented them stealing it.

You really cant park that bike outside. Its one of THE most sought after bike.

Heh, yeah I know it's a little dirty.  The streets have been a little wet as all the snow's melting and it's just gonna look like that again the moment after I clean it.  

RedShift, I'm surprised you know about our gravel and sand down in Midland.  You're right, you do have to be careful but luckily the main roads aren't too bad.

And, Pentablo, I appreciate the theft warning.  I'm still trying to figure out ways to keep it safe.  Right now, I have to park it where it is unless I bring it into my yard which would be both annoying to maneuver out and I'd be parking it on grass all the time.  And, thanks, you're right: the color rocks  .

BTW, it's SNOWING outside!!!  :x  and it's supposed to continue all week!

congrats on the new ride. I am going to have to second what pantablo said, It's not a matter of IF they might steal it but WHEN. If you leave that bike outside without some serious security it WILL get stolen. That I can guarantee. not trying to scare you, but that is the reality.

That's a beautiful bike! I saw it in a mag a while back - same colour and the red pinstripe wheels  - sooo sweet.  Congratulations! Be careful with it - on all levels; security, riding etc.
So you went from suzuki to yamaha, huh? Did you deal with Riverside? If not who? How was the service? I'm in Edmonton too, obviously, and always courious about the dealerships for my move up (sometime).
And yeah its snowing - went for an evening walk with my wife this evening bundled up like the middle of frickin winter!  :x Wind blowing the snow in our faces - yuck!
Hopefully it won't last long so we can both get out riding. Black is going to be a hard colour to keep clean but when it is - its the best looking colour. I've had black cars since 1988!

I spent a year working in Ft. Saskatchewan and have family in Edmonton.  Never rode back then, but did drift around a few corners in a car -- quite an eye opener.

A year or so I cut an apex at an intersection around here and hit a pile of sand that accumulated.  Rear end slid out but saved it.  Thought about Edmonton and all that grip they spread on the snow & ice and how it collects.  

Experience is a great teacher, if you survive the learning experience.

Great looking bike.  Be careful while you learn what it (and you) can do.  Enjoy the ride (and dress warmly)...

Yeah, I got both my bikes from Riverside.  Sales service is awesome.  I had a few problems getting my GS fixed there after it was hit in a parkinglot, but my salesman, Danny, made everything right again.  When you move up, I'd definantly recommend Riverside. Give me a contact and maybe I can help you out.  I've bought 2 bikes from him and I'll have given him business from two of my friends pretty soon, so who knows?
