why is it illeagel to sell a car without seatbelts, but leagel to sell a bike without a helmet ?

GeeP

Seatbelts are required by federal law, helmets are not.
Every zero you add to the tolerance adds a zero to the price.

ok, so my point was that in most states it is illeagel to ride the bike without a helmet, but you can purchase a bike without one.  how can you sell something without a leagely required piece of saftey equipment?

pizzleboy

Also, Helmets are designed to be disposable / one time use.

Are you going to trust a helmet included with the bike?

I sure as hell aint

I'm confused...you're saying that you can buy a car without seat belts?

In canada you can't ...at least in ontario.

you have to get the car saftied before you can buy it.  Everthing from tire, cracked windshield, brakes etc... whatever, all need to be fixed before you can transfer ownership.

I don't want a used helmet...but I see you're point. All equipment all the time.

I guess if the helmet was a part of the furniture like seatbelts are, there would be a law about it.  But whereas with seatbelts one size fits (almost)all, a helmet needs to be individually fitted to be of use.  Perhaps a law requiring the purchaser to provide proof of helmet ownership would make a small impact on injuries but would be very difficult to enforce, and would probably be "unconstitutional".  :o

Because most of people don't care about motorcyclist!
Am I right? hehehehe

yours.

as to why it's not mandated that motorcycles must be sold with helmets, whereas cars must be sold with seatbelts is because a seatbelt is a part of the automobile, and must be present to pass road saftey inspection tests.  it's a part of the auto, whereas your helmet is gear.  they're two completely different things.  missing seatbelts (part of the car) is more similar to missing your seat, or tail light, ie a physical part of your bike.  as helmets arn't necessary in all states, helmets are personal to the rider (anyone can fit in the same seatbelt, not anyone with the same helmet),  and that it's not part of the saftey features of the motorcycle as a vehicle, it's really not a good comparison.

1000+ day bump. but oddly a valid one. although no one ever mentioned. most places a car made before seatbelts were either thought of or were law can be sold and driven. usually is grandfathered in

Heavy Bump Yama!! VA is pretty strict on motos and helmets, but are just starting to enforce helmets on peds and scooters. I hate seeing it, even the scoot magoot kids.. Everyone needs a helmet.

I did have a dream when I first started riding that I was on the GS, but it had a seat belt(lap belt style)..  :dunno_white:  Then I crashed bad and was flipping end over end while strapped to the seat by the belt. Haha not sure what I ate before bed that gave me that nutter dream

Seat belts aren't sized and fitted to each individual.

Also, helmets aren't attached to the bike.

But I understand the point.  Proper equipment should be required to purchase in this case, though, not to sell.  When I sold my last motorcycle, I was inclined to keep my gear for my next bike.
But I didn't let the potential buyer test ride it without his own gear and proof of M class license.  He delivered, and that day rode home on a Suzuki GS650 with lighter pockets.

And wow, I guess it's never too dead to resurrect.

agreed. I usually keep my gear as well its noiot required to have belts to sell a car. however it is required to register it. the monster resurrections are my doing. since I have free time, I set a new goal. resurrect something that makes sense
