it'd help if you let us know which province you lived in.
In Ontario you don't need a bike to get your motorcycle learner's permit, it is a written test.  Did you not ask these questions to the person at the DMV ?

cheesy

you should be able to get a bike insured without it being registered.  where I live (atlanta) the order is:

1) insurance
2) registration
3) MC license

Answer me this...  Why is it that countries with FREE health care have these insane insurance rates?  I mean the majority of the cost of an accident is for medical expenses right?  So, if ALL the healthcare is FREE to EVERYONE, then what exactly ARE you paying all that money for?

Can anyone answer this?

In Ontario they force us to buy loss of income or personal injury insurance as part of our regular insurance. On my car insurance I pay just over $800 a year on a 1990 Celica

This is $290 for 1 Million PL PD Public Liability and Public Damage.

$430 for the government FORCED loss of income stuff

$53 for unisured driver ( also FORCED on us )

The big problem is the Government FORCES us to have insurance but doesn't regulate the industry. It's the wild west up here for insurance. The industry just keeps pumping the Govenment full of money and they get to do what they want.

The best part is the insurance industry claim is they are loosing money right left and centre on all the policies even after they post a 774% profit last year.  I say burn them all in hell.

1- Get licence (Take MSF course I mentioned yesterday and insurance will be cheeper)
2- Get insurance (LGTRASK is good in N.S. -- My second year with them, full coverage at just under $1000yr on a 2004F)
3- Get Plates / Register
4- Drive!

Insurance companies are cash cows for the government. Not being a "crown" corporation they can do pretty much anything they want ... Highway robbery is a good term :D I like that.

The problem is that your assumtion that medical is the highest part of claims is wrong. The way it works in Ontario, and most provinces in Canada (exept Quebec, Manitoba, and I believe BC) is that your insurance covers your damages/loss, regardless of who is at fault. If you were not at fault, your insurance then sues the other party's insurance to recoup (sp) their expenses. This creates a climate were lawyer on both side sue each other, introduce a whole bunch of crap motions and draw out the process. Lawyers win.

But the main problem is, as was stated earlier, that you have to be insured to drive, the insurance companies make all the rules, and you have no choice but to pay it.  Or you do like me and move to Quebec and see your rates go from 4000$ a year for full coverage on a 04 SVS 650 in Ontario to $1100.
Sold the GS, Bought 2k4 SVS 650 (the faster blue one)
