I'm always looking at other bikes... like looking at other chics...  Don't really dig the repli-racer look and can't take the ergonomics.  I love the DL-650, even though it looks like a bug.  And it's a V-Twin!!!

Depends at what you want to do with the bike.
Do you want to do 2,000 miles a year and look good?
Do you want to do 10,000 miles a year and ride a bug?
To me a bike is a means to an end.
However, once in a while I do lust.

If you're thinking of getting a bike like a GSXR600 and you're ready for it, I say go for it.  I recently got my R6 and, although I'm still breaking in the engine, I couldn't be happier with a bike.  You loose a lot when you go from the GS to a 600R bike though.  You loose some of the manouverability, a little of the comfort (I don't have any problems leaning forwards a little more, heh), and the safety of not being able to go faster than 200km/h in just a few short seconds.
My friend has a CBR600 and he loves it too.  I don't think I'm gonna leave the 600 class.  There's a LOT of power here, but I'd like to think it's not too much so that I never use any of it.
Personally, I prefer the Yamaha R6 to the GSXR, but if you're looking for that extra performance, it's an amazing transition!

I sold my gs500 last night and plan on buying a gsxr600 this weekend.  It sucks that today is nice out and I have no bike to ride though.  Damn I'm depressed.

I ride 10,000 - 12,000 miles a year on my R1.

People complain about riding position, blah, blah, blah.  I'm almost 30 and can still ride the R1 for 5-6hours with little discomfort.  As with any bike, you get used to the position.

You really can't go wrong with any of the big 4 600's.  Keep in mind the big boost in power, but I wouldn't worry too much about it.  Most of the 600's are pretty tame below 8 grand (like GS500 tame).  Once you hit 8K, watch out, the current 600's scream above 8K.

FYI - those 600's are nowhere near 125+hp at the rear wheel (even with most mods).

I just went from a GS500 to a Triumph Speed 4.  The ergonomics actually feel better to me on the Speed 4.  When I get back on the GS500, it feels like my arms are stretched out too far.  The S4 has about 97 hp instead of 120 hp like some of the Japanese 600s so it's not as big of a jump.   It is also a lot cheaper to buy and insure.  I paid $4500 for a 2004 with ~2100 miles on it, with a year of warranty left.

The GS500 feels a lot lighter and more maneuverable to me at low speeds.  The S4 is a lot higher and I had trouble doing tight turns in parking lots with it, but I'm sure practice will take care of that.

Never said RWHP, just HP.

Have you tried an SV650 out yet?  03 and up models with the optional factory lower look pretty good and you can get smoking deals on them.  If you're dead set on a 600ss consider the F4i as well as the other SS bikes and the ZZR 600 (05 model) as well.  Those two bikes would be a bit less radical of a change from the GS and both are capable of hanging with the current crop of 600SS bikes with all but the fastest riders aboard.

S4 is a alot of bike for the $$ too.  Better suspension than the SV, and boy does it look good.

if you are talking about a gsx600 thats a Katana. Check out www.maximum-suzuki.com for katana related issues. good bikes. heavy and most consider them ugly.

If you are talking about the gsxR600, the supersport bike then your experience moving up to one from the gs500 will depend on what experience you have on the gs.

I moved up to a 600rr after riding my gs for 16 months, 9,000 miles...mostly canyon miles. I had no trouble with the step up. I moved up because my goal was canyons and track riding, which the 600rr excels at. the honda is one of the easiest SS bikes to ride. The R6 and gsxr less so.

I've had the 600rr for about 10 months now and havent looked back since...

I'm with Smoker,   the DL 650 is a thinking man's bike. Well, I think that's why I bought one.   8)
