Hi Guys,
My Girl Friend's 92 GS 500 is great for her learning to ride with.  She keeps it relatively tame as far as rpms go, and she hasn't had any problems with it.  Yesterday my son and I took a ride(him being on the gs).  We were cruising along at 90 indicated(which i figger is probably closer to 82 actual) and the bike had a loss of power.  Not sure if one cylinder just stopped working or what.  After pulling over on the side of the freeway,  it started up and ran fine again till high gear and 90 indicated again.  We turned around and went back home.  We pulled the plugs to see what they looked like.  In the process of pulling the plugs, the left hand plug wire just kinda fell apart.  (the lead into the boot wasn't too secure)  We pulled the plugs.  The left side plug was Real dry.  The insulator was the Whitest I have ever seen an operating plug be.  The bike has a k&n air filter on it. (I do not know if it was rejetted already or not)  We put the plugs back in, fixed the plug wire(at this point we thought that the plug wire might have been the problem)  Then went back out for a test ride.  Same problem.  (sorry for the long post) I was just wondering if you guys have an idea of what may be causing the problem.  Thanks in advance

more than likely a fuel problem.  Check the float levels, try driving on PRI, Open the gas tank and see if there is a vaccume building up.

Its been askes many times.

Sounds to me like it's running too lean. If you have the stock filter, throw it in and see what it does. May need to rejet.

do the GS's have a govenor (restrictor)....my old 98 GS used to do that around 93 mph.....felt like the engine would shut off....would come back to life in a few secs.....
PETE: It's four in the funking morning!

SHAUN: It's Saturday!

PETE: No, it's not. It's funking Sunday. And I've got to go to funking work in four funking hours 'cos every other funker in my funking department is funking ill! Now can you see why I'm SO FUNKING ANGRY?

ED: Funk, yeah!

No governor. Your bike may have been running excessively lean at high rpm, it may have gotten too hot running at extended high speed/rpm, or could have been starving for fuel at a specific point for any number of reasons. Pure speculation though having never ridden your bike!

Thanks for the replies.  When we bought the bike the p.o. gave us a box containing the stock air box and filter.  (he said he was gonna install it but never did, didn't think to ask why at the time)  Anyway I think we are going to try installing the stock stuff and see if it makes any difference.  Will letcha know ifn it helped or not.  Again thanks for the replies.

Make sure the tank valve is completely on, and there are no other obstructions in getting high fuel flow to carbs.
