Just looking for suggestions on how to go about painting my gas tank on my yellow '04. I want to paint the tank black before I put some new graphics on it. I easily removed all the stock decals from the fairing with a hairdryer and Goo Gone but the decals on the tank are under the clear coat finish! I started to remove but it seems like it will take forever (not to mention the sanding that will need to be done because the finish is getting screwed up). Can I just paint over the entire tank, decals and all? Anybody else have a better idea?

I repainted all my bike with rattle cans and it looks great.

Dont' waste your time with sanding.  How i did my tank was go to your hardware store or walmart.  Buy some super strong paint remover, the kind that burns your hands (through rubber glvoes), the kind that burns your lungs, the kind that has cancer warning on the side, the kind that has a death if swallowed, the kind that burns your eyes and you can't see for hours afterwards, you know the kind, look for a bluish metal tin with a squirtbottle on the side. You pour it in, spray it on the tank watch the paint fall right off.  Also get a razor blade type thing for getting the paint off, should be easy peasy.  Might have to spray the stuff a few times but its' way easier then sanding.  Once you get the paint off sand the tank down pri and your good to go.

Yeah I know the kind...could I use on fairing too? I think I can just sand, prime and paint the plastic w/o much trouble.

just buy a couple of paint stripper in a spray can. you can get those at any auto parts store. it's easy but also messy...you'll need a good mask, chemical resistent gloves.

work in sections. spray a generous amount. let it eat up the pain for at least 5 minutes (or see instructions)...then, peel it off. you'll see the paint paint completely buble up. if you try to peel the paint off too early, it'll get very messy.
My hunch was right...Pandy is the biggest Post Whore!

Nope, it will eat up the plastic, I learned that the hard way lol.  Have to sand those babies.

Thanks guys. I think I know what I have to do - breath deeply (with a mask) and strip it away! One last question, what grit sandpaper do you recommend for the tank and for the plastic?
