This was your first and your last bike...are you giving up riding? If so then I can respect that. I have had bad wrecks that gave me pause to reconsider the act of riding a motorcycle. But I always got back on. I don't ride anywhere near as much as I did when I was younger but I guess it's been in my blood so long that I can't quit altogether. It does seem the most dangerous aspect of riding is the other driver who isn't paying attention, and that's the real scary part; we have no control over that one factor. And yes, it does seem like this has been a bad week for accidents. I narrowly avoided one a few days ago when the front washed out in a corner...I probably looked like a dirt-tracker trying to get it straightened out but I strained my shaZam! through a sieve and somehow didn't go down. I hope you heal ok and re-consider riding a bike. But if you don't that's quite understandable. Love my Baby GS, Brazil, and the forum.

No man i love the ride but my nest big investment is kids and that was when the bike was going anywhay.  So, It just went a little early.  Maybe when im old a cruiser will be in my futrue.

cummuterguy

ouch! that's my worst fear in regards to riding, the guy that doesn't see you while you are boxed in at a stop... nothing you can do to avoid it.

It's amazing what our bodies can take. I got my right let slammed between an orange tree and a 78 CB750k a long time ago, at around 35mph. It bent the frame on the bike, tore my leg open 14 inches from knee to ankle, popped out the muscles and the two broken ends of the tibia (smaller of the two leg bones)

The inside of my leg had the perfect scar impression of the side of the mikuni carb that slammed into it.

My leg should have been pinched right off of there, but 2 months later I was running just as fast as I did before that accident. That was 13 years ago.

Heal well, I respect your decision to give up the sport, given the circumstances. That gut wrenching split second when that car was headed towards you and you just knew it was gonna take you out is a hard thing to overcome. I fear it, and I've never been in that scenario.

Good luck, Eric, and do what's best for you.

Incidents like yours really suck.  There was likely nothing you could have done short of watching your rear and popping the clutch as to avoid getting impaled.  While I often keep a look behind me when I stop at a light (for the very type of inattentive driver your experienced), I know I don't do it enough.  Sorry you had to be the victim.

I'm curious to know what kind of gear did you wear?  What color was it?  I'm interested as to how I match up on the conspicuous factor.

My gear is predominantly red (Joe Rocket Meteor 3 & HJC Full-face with graphics) as shown in my avatar.

I too can respect someone who went through the trauma you did and wants to hang it up.  Your choice.  Heal well & deal with the bike later.

sucks man....really does....don't wanna sound rude, but first thing that comes to mind is that you didn't leave yourself an out....important rule from msf.....lane positioning is very important even when stopped....I try to never actually be behind someone.....I always stop angled so that if I need to scoot, I can go beside someone (like lane splitting).....either way its all in the past, just heal up good, and take care of the kids.....they're much more important then any bike will ever be.....

i was going to ask the same question!

sorry to hear about this, i've had a couple of people come to a tire-squaling halt a few feet behind be before and it's a sound you never want to hear. I'm glad you came out of this with as little of injury as you did.

almost hate to ask, but want to sell? i'm almost GS-less and wouldnt mind buying one to rebuild!

I think you should reconsider riding, just give it time.  My dad on new years eve went to auto zone to pick up some valve bucket things that we had ordered.  He was on his bike going about 35 down highway 80 through an intersection when a guy turned left infront of him.  He swerved but caught the rear fender and was thrown over his bike and landed on the other side of the car.  His bike was totalled causing 19000 dollars worth of damage to his bike and 75000 to his leg.  his foot was in his face.  He now has a titanium rod in his leg that supports his femur.  He was riding a month or so ago and he still is, he bought a new bike.  He should have lost his leg too.  Dont lose the love of riding because of another person stupid actions.  Not to say you shouldnt be scared about it happening again, Ive never been through a wreck like that but I think you should think about getting back on a bike.

jordanearl

gotta love those titanium rods in the femur, i had a bike wreck in 01 that gave me one of those.  damn cagers and their running of stop signs!!!!!!

I had mine removed a year or so ago tho, so no more ROBO-JORDAN for me

glad you were so fortunate, usually i attempt to position myself driver side outside of lane right near the lane lineso im never looking at a bumper, but im guilty of forgetting sometimes.

I once heard screeching brakes behind me while at a stop light, i was still in gear and rolled forward enough to see the car come to a stop where i used to be...

As far as selling goes i am just going to let the insurance company have it I will try to see where they take it because it dose have the V&H ignition advancer in her.

Thanks for the support.

I live over in Pittsburg. I'd buy the ignition advancer if you choose to sell it.
