I'm glad to see your not torn between a GSXR 1000 and an R1 as a begginer bike. I would like to say an older GS becuase of no plastic. Its real comforting when your a begginer knowing you won'nt be broke if the bike goes down.

QuoteMy biggest fear is that the 500 may be too much power for me to start off with.

:?  hmmm...give it like a week.  You are going to beg for that extra power..especially at freeway speeds.

First off both bikes can end up killing you if you do not respest them!

If you plan on just riding by yourself  both bikes can be fun but if you plan on riding with others the 250 will be slower and tend to make the group ride issue no fun.

For your first bike try and find a good used bike at bargin basement price so if you decide that the 250 or 500 is not enough power you can either ale it or trade it without eneding up in the negative and also if you find motorcyles not to be what you wanted it will be eaier to sale a used older bike than a new one for a greater return on your investment.

Again the size of the bike does not matter as far as it ability to kill you if you do not respect it for what it is.  If you do not respect a moped or a GSXR1000 you can end up dead!

I agree with all that has been said...any bike can kill you (some easier than others)

I personally have had both the 250 and the gs500...
Either choice is good, although the 250 might not keep you interested as long.

Didn't mean to sound  "squidish" with the power thing, the 250 felt sooooo fast when I first started riding it.

Good luck,
