Got the Hawk GT single sided swing arm from Ken, and finally got around to grinding it to fit in the frame.  the pics suck, but you get the idea.  more to come when it's done.

Does anyone know if you can shorten a Yosh can by cutting out the middle section and putting back on the end pieces?  with all that room on the exhaust side i was thinking......... short exhaust can under the seat.

OMFG that is soo cool!!!

How much work was that?

well, all i've done so far was to grind it so that it would fit inside the frame where it mounts with that long bolt that goes through the frame.   So, the hardest part so far was actually finding one.  I've still got to mount and hook up the rear brake, find bearings for the pivot and make bushings so the GS shaft will fit the Hawk bearings, and make some sort of suspension mount. so, in the end i think it's going to be a lot of work.

Hmm, maybe someone should make a kit :thumb: .  If someone would pre-grind (or face mill, better yet) a swingarm, make the suspension parts, and some bushings, it would bolt right on a stock GS.  (you'd need a new chain if you used the hawk sprocket)  :P

I knew that was a GS I saw in one of my previous posts about buying my new bike. I remember someone saying that you thought it was A Honda Hawk. I'm pretty sure now it was a GS with this mod.

Looks sweet man.

From what I stated above I saw a GS with the same swingarm and a full race solo tail with an underseat exhaust. Probably what your planning on doing. I'll have to find that guy and take pics of his bike.

and Ken said it would not fit.

Yes the Yosh canister can be shortened. There is just a mesh screen on the inside that presses on to the end caps. The sleeve being riveted to each end holds it together. I have not taken the GS Yosh can apart but this is typical of their other cans. If needed, I have some pics that I took when I had a couple of them apart. I have a Yosh can from a ZX11 that I plan on using for a undertail exhaust, unless I use a M4 can.
Common sense in not very common.

I just want a Hawk GT.... and a 600RR. One for commuting, one for fun. O_O

Very cool mod, however!

i didn't say it wouldn't fit....
I said it would be a pain in the ass to fit
anything can be done with a mill and a welder.....

he hasn't tried finding a shock to fit yet

Stoobings.... the GT spring rate is 800+# or something!!!!!!!

it had a better chance fitting than the VFR750 SSSA that i had before the GT one

and i wasn't willing to start it....cause the SSSA would be totally useless if it didn't work.....

I was out jogging the other night and I saw a Hawk GT.  I stopped and drooled over that bike.  And then on the way home, I stopped and drooled some more.  Soooo cool.

That swingarm looks amazing.

i'm gonna use the old gsxr shock i had on the GS before.  i think that should work fine

it did fit, but it was DAMN TIGHT.  I had to remove the bearing seals and grind right down to the bearings on the outside of the pivot.  the bearings ultimatly determine how much i can narrow the swing arm.  Ken you know what i'm talking about.

im going to cut a gsxr Yosh can in half i think.  dgyver can you send me some of thos pics?  Stoobings@hotmail.com

thanks :)

ya might want to see if the GT spring will fit your shock of choice......

or that puppy is gunna squat

i dont get it....
if the bike's the same weight (because the only thing i changed was the swingarm), why is it going to sag if i use the same shock in the back??

the GSXR shock i had on it before held it up just fine.   maybe i misinterperted, but changing the swingarm isn't going to affect the "sprung" weight  (is "sprung" a real term?), so there's still the same amount of weight pushing down on the shock.  is that what you mean?  or are you sayin I'm too damn fat? :nana:

oh man.... cut off the rear peg supports just below the gromet today, cut off the tie-down bars yesterday....  tank off, gettin ready to strip it the rest of the way, damn this stuff is fun :)   mmmmmmm stripping.... there's just something about naked twins..... hahaha

werase643

did you notice the shock linkage that i sent you.......

it doesn't have any....therefore  the rules are different.
with linkage you can use a lighter spring....therefore you can add valving for control

just giving you input in the concept that there is more to it than just slappin it in there and it will work great.

Nice work, but he's right about that GSXR shock not working.  Linkage makes a big difference in the amount of force the shock needs to put out.  What's the difference in length between the stock swing arm and the Hawk's?  The Hawk looks like it has the wheel a little farther back than stock.  Hard to say though.

Good luck with the project, couple pointers, get yourself a matching front rim to that rear, loose the center stand as soon as you're done and when you route the exhaust, take advantage of that nice open space you have in front of your rear wheel now.

ahhh, i see, got it.   i was missing the whole "no linkage" part.  thanks!

so the gt shock is attatched directly to the frame and swingarm?  i was thinking about setting it up like the GS, and making a new linkage thingy.  the way the gs frame is, there's no way to mount the shock directly between the frame and the swingarm, wayy too tight between the two mounting points.

werase643, what setup would you recomend?  you sound like you know what you're talking about.   any suggestions would be great :thumb:

Sprinklerhead

Look into other SSSA with linkage.  If you don't mind waiting a week I'll take photos of the shock linkage on my Speed Triple after I pick it up.  Rather than trying to make a custom shock linkage, you might be better off welding on a new shock mount higher up on the frame.  No one said it would be easy.  Good luck.

I talked to a friend of mine that put an NT 650 SSSA onto an F2.  I think you picked the wrong SSSA to go with, you should have used the VFR SSSA because it uses a linkage for the shock mount.  The easiest way you're going to get that one to work is to weld on a new shock mount higher up on the frame and use a pretty heavy spring, also try seeing how short of a shock you can get for it.  Might want to look into picking up an old Hawk shock.

the VFR arm is about 1.5 inches wider than the GS
i seriously don't think ya could grind off that much and still get it to work....

I traded a VFR SSSA for the HAWK GT SSSA......

also....
ya got a GT shock....it will get you in the right ballpark

DGUYVER has no problem moving the upper shock mount.....
set the ride height
move the upper shock mount
weld it in
