saw it on ebay. is it too high of a gear?

Somebody just did that.  I guess it killed the top end.  They can't go over 50 mph anymore so he is going to a 15t.  But you have to shorten the chain with a 13t, so it could be a pain.  You should be able to use the same chain with a 15t (even though you really should replace it) by using Kerry's chain tensioning method.

I wouldn't go 13t unless you intend to trailer your bike around and compete in stunting contests.

well is the 15t noticable>?   if so how much

a front sprocket on fleabay better be under 10 bucks
they cost 12-20 bucks from a real dealer
you will probably not be happy with the 13
i like a 14 or a 15 personally

What was the top speed in first with the bike when you had a 14?  what about a 15?

Hmmm.. no way. Even w/ a 13t you should be able to get up to 70mph or so just fine assuming the rear sprocket is stock. I know when I switched to a 15t it only upped my RPMs a little, maybe 500, no more than 1k.

That said... I made up all those numbers, and I really don't feel like getting into the math so... who knows.

13T is also a really tight turn for the chain and can decrease your chain life.  Stick to 14+ and if you need more go bigger on the rear.

what is the best one to change? front or rear?  i want to accellerate faster.. top speed is not a concern

treybrad

Going smaller on the front or bigger in the back will both make you accelerate faster. Like, Kzin said, 14t or so is about the smallest you'll want to do on the front because the diameter of the sprocket will get too small (stock is 16t). The back stock is 39t, one tooth in the front is equivalent to 3 in the rear... So yeah. The benifit to the front is, it's cheaper, you won't have to change out your chain, and it's much easier to install, and dropping one tooth is the same as gaining 3 in the back...

And just to clairfy, I was paraphrasing when I said he couldn't get over 50 mph with a 13t.  I've never run anything but stock.  Just calling on old posts.

There are so many noob questions, I was just trying to help take the load off some of the heavy hitters (Kerry, Pantablo, Srinath, Dgyver, et al.).

i was the one that just put the 13T on. Great pick up and good for stunting, but don't expect to keep up with any other bike, that's why i'm going to a 15T. Too many of my friends have bigger bikes and I don't want to be left 10 miles behind.

Ah ha, it was you. Well, since you KNOW, what was top speed..? out of curiosity.

I recently put a 13T sprocket on my bike and just cut out a link of the stock chain. I hate it  killed my top end. My bike screams at like 50mph. that sucks big time. I won't even be able to keep up with mopeds. So, i decided to go with the 15T instead. Will I be able to use the modified chain or do I need to replace it? If so what size chain should I go with for this? I'm pretty sure it's a 520, right, but how many links do I need? Also what is the stock size rear sprocket? thanx for any and all help. "

in all truthfullness my speedo isn'ty working. i'm waiting on a cable. i only had it out a few times with the 13T, but just from that I really didn't like what it did to my top end end. I was probably doing around fifty and the rpm's were up there. i'm sure it could go faster, but i don't want to be going down the highway with the engine screaming constantly.
