I know there has been a lot of comments about inexperienced riders who buy too much motorcycle. I saw that Kellen Winslow of the Cleveland Browns messed himself up pretty good while learning to ride a motorcycle in a parking lot. Here is a picture of the poor damaged GSX-R750.

Apparently he hit a curb.

From the reports I read he just bought a 2005 GSX-R750, which does not come in the red flavor. So, who is right and who is wrong? That seems like a lot of damage for hitting a curb in a parking lot.

What an idiot. He did so many things wrong.

1) Buying a motorcycle because he watched the Starboyz perform

2) Buying a 750

3) Not having a permit

4) Not strapping his helmet

5) Violating his contract

I mean, I love riding as much as anyone but if someone pays me 5 million dollars and tells me not to ride I'm not going to ride.

It was a 750... I live in Cleveland and when I saw it on the news, I saw the actual 750 on the tail of the bike...

If he had GaurdRail'd his noggin' doing 150mph, I'd be right there with you.  But he hit a curb in a parking lot doing 35mph.  That's been done within MSF before.  The 750R may have gotten him to 35mph quickly, but this accident doesn't scream "squid on a rocket" to me.  

He did several things right:

-got a permit first (right there, that puts him ahead of many members of this very forum)
-licensed the bike
-was practicing in a parking lot
-in daylight
-under supervision (possibly even by a licensed rider)
-bought a helmet

As far as beginner motorcyclists, I'd bet that taking these steps put him in the top 10% of new riders.  And while he lost a few "cool" points by failing to fasten the helmet, he was obviously trying to (minimally) meet the requirements of the law.  I'd say that makes him "above average:" I'd bet that more than 50% of new riders try learning without benefit of even the permit, but come back later and get legal when they decide to keep riding.


The real mistake he made was giving up millions of dollars.
What a fool.
