there are 3 main parts that wear out:

metal discs (they are metal.. obviously..)
friction discs (have friction material on them... obviously..)
and springs.

Sometimes you can swap around the discs and add washers to the springs...  and use it for awhile longer..

friction discs are also known as plates, correct?  and to fix this problem, i will have to open the engine right?

The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

good judgement trumps good skills every time.

The right side case cover has to be removed. Do not forget about the screw under the signal generator plate. It takes about 1-2 hours to install a new clutch.

The metal plates can generally be reused unless they are warped or really blued from over heating. If you are going to open it up, might as well replace it all. Then you know it is all good instead of hoping that it is. The clutch is the same as the 1st gen SV (98-02) but there is 1 more or less plate. I would need to double check but I have posted the correct amount here before.
Common sense in not very common.

yeah,  the metal plates and almost always be reused without issue, the fiber plates wear out the fastest and the springs relax when heated too many times.
