Well, I guess it's best to just jump in and see whether you lot rip me limb from limb... ;)

I've just today bought a new GS500, sadly have to wait until Wednesday to collect it. Would you all generally say it's a reliable bike?

Welcome, I have never heard anything bad about the GS, except from loosers who own EX500's. Anyways you"ll like it, and you'll come to the right place. There are a tone of good people hear.

Welcome! Plan on buying good gear (jacket, pants, gloves, boots) and good raingear. The bike is reliable even if not properly maintained, but why take a chance.
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

Richard died in a motorcycle accident that was at no fault of his own.  We lost a good friend and good member of this board.  Though Rich may be gone, his legacy will live on here.

Craig, looks like you have the cart before the horse, seeing you bought into GS500 technology then ask if it's worthy of the investment.   :)

No matter.  The machine is bullet-proof and easily cared for with a little attention.  Clean the chain every 600 miles (adjust slack if necessary), replace the oil regularly, watch the valve clearences, replace fluids per schedule, and fill it up with petrol before or shortly after you hit reserve (anywhere between 150 - 250 miles depending on the type of travel).

I've had mine for three seasons now and not a hint of a problem.  You and your GS should be very happy together for some time to come.  I know I am...

Well, thank you all for the welcome and advice, it's great :) I collected the bike today, and, though obviously taking it easy, I've been around on it, and love it. :)

Nice to see so many other owners, if I have any problems/questions, I know where to ask :D
