Thanks. I'm ordering the full head gasket set today. I'm not doing the gides since they should be fine.
I'm going to try and find a engin.shop thats willing to do the head for me but I.m quite sure you haven.t heard the last of me :)

If you're experienced, you can use a wire brush in a drill but don't try it unless you know what you're doing.  Aluminum goes away very quickly under a drill.

Just scrape it with something blunt so you don't leave any hot spots behind.  I also use various cans of whatever solvent I happen to have at the moment e.g. WD40, brake cleaner.

If you're feeling frisky, get a fine sanding roll at the hardware store (OSH sells them) and polish the combustion chamber.

I will scrap the heavy stuff off first with a plastic putty knife (usually it is a piece of plexiglass). I have used a nylon bristle wheel to clean pistons tops. The bristles are soft enough where they do not cause any damage. Alcohol on a rag and a little rubbing takes off the rest.
