I was looking at seats that were available on the net.

Are all GS500 either E or F seats swapable ?

Thanks,

Marc

No, not directly. The plastics are different as well.
Common sense in not very common.

But between GS500E, say a 1989 to 2002 is there a problem to fit?
I spotted a seat of 2000 bike that I want to get for my 1991

2000 should be fine...a seat from 01 and up won't fit your bike.
My hunch was right...Pandy is the biggest Post Whore!

This is for the US models:

89-2000 = all body work interchangable

2001, 2002, 2004, seats and rear plastics will fit 89-2000 with some minor modification.. you have to make a couple brackets... no welding required.

2004 front fairing will fit 89-2000 with welding required.

So, we've gathered that the body work is different between E and F models, but what about mechanically? Which year models are the same as the others non-cosmetic wise?

89-2000 are virtually identical.  The biggest change is from 89 to 90.  89's had clip on handlebars, and the headlight brackets are aluminum rather than steel.

90-2000 had steel headlight brackets and 'regular' style bars.

2001 the carbs changed to a type with a mid jet, and dual cable throttle (along with the bodywork change).  the gauges are also different

in 2004 they added a TPS to the carbs, the ingition rotor is different, and other electrical differences, some relating to emissions. The tach was changed to being electrical because the tach cable sort of intereferes with the fairing bracket when the steering is at full left lock.

I also *think* that the generator magnet/stator was changed to some other type.  this probably means that the regulator/rectifier is different.

edit:

also, on the 2001+ with the 'smoother' seats and tails, the reg/rectifier, flasher, and possibly fuse was relocated further back so that it was still covered by the rear plastics

In '93 or '94 the front sprocket setup was changed.  The front sprocket on later years has a "shoulder" on it.

In '96 the front brake caliper was changed, but the mounting points remained the same.

From what I have seen (I have owned a '96, a '99 and an '00) the model years 1996-2000 were identical except for paint colors.
