I'll bet they did.  And they would have been a PITA for the ER staff.  They would have demanded to be seen immediately, over anyone else who may be just as unwell but not self-inflicted.  They would have demanded to be rendered completely pain-free instantly, and would have expected to be completely cured and be able to leave the ER for the pub within an hour.  They would not have followed any of the instructions of the staff regarding keeping still, avoiding food and drink in preparation for OR, or not smoking prior to an anaesthetic.
And when the inevitable bad outcome occurred, they would blame anyone but themselves.
And they still wouldn't understand why everyone else had so little respect for them.
