VERY high idle..can't diagnose

Float levels are good. Throttle and choke cables seem fine.. mixture screws set to 3 full turns out from dead stop. K&N pod with wileyco new jets and needle raised with #4 washer underneath e clip.

bike roars to life and won't go below 7000 rpm.. sounds like a bat out of hell.
once i cut the engine out it smokes just a little white from the exhaust (new exhaust maybe?-or is it lean) not smoking while running.

thoroughly stumped..  :dunno:

free    to anyone able to help me get going in time for work tomorrow (it's a long walk)

PS what should i do with the breather hose from the cylinder head?

The breather hose goes into the airbox - look for a spout on the front of the airbox .

ktrim

put a small filter on the breather hoseand wire tie soit doesn't flop around,  the high idle could be caused by a vacuum leak.   check the boots between the carbs and head..  also check to make sure the slides are down,  they may have not gone all the way back down when you re-assembled (im assuming you just rejetted) or the may have bound up and stuck ..
oops,  you'll need a new one of them

For the breather hose, I just stuffed a fuel filter in the hose and taped it there. Probably not the best way to go, but better than nothing. I read somewhere here that it should be filtered.

I had the same problem after I cleaned my carbs out...it revved up to 6000 rpms. I kept unscrewing the fuel/air mix screw between the carbs. It took many more turns out than I thought it should have, but eventually it did drop. I'm having more problems with idling though, so I'm not sure if this will help.

billdapart

Discovered a small hole in the fuel line right at the fitting on the tank.. hopefully that and a little adjustment on the throttle set screw (not the idle) will help.

Fingers crossed (don't really want to walk tomorrow)

Thanks guys for all the help

I've got a small k&n for one my r/c trucks I can throw on the breather.

Pod and pipe = 150 mains and 40 pilots ... new jets - Hope you meant that ... and yea you cant have vacuum or fuel leaks ...
Cool.

Yeah I put those jets you sent me in Srinath..

Don't have any vacuum leaks that I know of.. that one small one might have been it..and found the thing was binding the throttle cable just a smidge.. now when I can get the battery to crank her over (she's acting kinda strange) she'll start and it's much the same as it was before -as I've heard other people complain about.. idle won't stay twist the idle a smidge and she goes to 3000.. so I'm gonna order a new battery and a carb rebuild kit and try putting the carbs together again with new gaskets and stuff... maybe just touch the float level a tiny bit.. what does it mean when the fuel level is just above the gasket (about 4-5 mm) that means the float level is...high right?

yeah so anyway thanks for all the help guys.. and again Srinath thanks for all the good gear... the handlebars I can already tell rock.. the flange for the wileyco makes the thing sing like a horny banshee and the fork brace.. well hasn't been put on yet.. but damn is it ever beef.

Check your intake boots to the head while you are looking things over....they go bad ( usually when you pull the carbs off is when they crack...Ask me how I know...) .  If they are the originals they are 14-15 years old now...

If you wipe down the carb boots with some Megquires rubber conditioner it keeps themsoft and pliable.  they will not dry rot as fast.  As often as the carbs have to be removed this ssouldnt be that big of a deal.  been doing it for years on the dirt bikes and have never had one break..

Fuel above the gasket 4-5 mm is huge ... 1 mm is bad, 4-5 is a lot. Bring it back to gasket level. OK that will make it richer not leaner ... now You also dont need a rebuild ... unless the float gasket is leaking. The other O rings in that rebuild kit are useless ... Autoparts store is better for those. I'll bet you got some sorta Throttle cable hangup or choke cable hang up ... so you're likely to be over rich and barely hold idle with what you have it set to ... If you fit the bars on ... did you sand them before fitting (You got 2 weld or 4 weld??) 2 welds are too large OD after powdercoat ... so sand it to have throttle fit nice and free spinning.
Cool.

I had this problem when doing jetting and new filter and pipe too.  The solution was ridiculously simple. All the tweaking and twisting when tikering witht he carbs left my throttle cable twisted and bound up.  I couldn't get the idle down with the screw between the carbs, so i went up the the little adujster right by the throttle grip itself.  It's threaded and has a little nut to lock it in place.  I backed oout the locking nut and twisted it in a few turns and idle dropped right down.  I honestly think the cable was bound up inside and just relieving that little bit of torsion set it straight.  If you haven't tried it yet, it might be worth it.  SOmetimes simple is good (see my recent post about my oil filter gasket)>

good luck

Haha.. yeah

Getting the idle down was ok... then i was dealing with keeping the idle strong.. of course the bike has to start in order for me to work on that...DOH! Now I need to work on the fact that the bike, though turning over slowly, won't kick. I think it's a battery issue and I'm going to order a new one just in case.

So now Srinath.. how do I go about lowering the fuel level with the floats..
do I just slightly bend the tang down?
Proud owner of one sorry old 91 streetfighter of a gs

The Buddha

The float tang needs to go up as it sits in the bike.
Cool.

Bump.

Just wondering if you solved your problem, billdapart
Did you adjust your float height yet?
