ok at 6000 you need to adjust the blinker fluid valves so that the front and back lights flash at the same rate and there is a preportioning valve so that the two sides blink at the same rate too. then you need to adjust the brake preportioning valve so that you are gettign the right rate of braking between the front and rear brakes, then you need to adjust the fork damping valves so that as the fork oil gets older and less viscious it still goes through the emulator at the same damping rate, same for the rear shock.  then there is the clutch fluid valve that controls the clutch fluid, that needs to be adjusted too.  and then there is the engine valves....

davipu: Don't be evil.

It's the Engine valves.
The GS500 has 4 of them ; and inlet and an exhaust for each of the 2 cylinders.
These valves control when fuel can get into and fumes can get out of the
cylinders. They both need to be closed when the piston compresses the fuel/air mix. The opening and closing of these valves is controled by cams in the cyylinder head pushing down on shims on top of the valves.
The valve clearance check just makes sure that these shims are the right thickness to keep the valves opening enough when required and closing enough too.

You get all sorts of odd behaviour from the enging as the clearances get too wide or too narrow.
Personally I'd be tempted to check the clearances my self before sending the bike in for service. If they are within spec then don't get them checked in the service. However if they are out of spec, and you don't fancy trying to adjust them yourself, then get the garage to do them as part of the service.

Seriously though, what Red_Phil said. Check them, or have them checked, regularly. For us in the states it's every 4000 miles.

that I watch too much south park, we blame you flappy headed bastards for all of americas problems.

if the bike is running ok, then it's not nessassary to take it in at all, but when the front wheel falls off.....   your screwed.

I can't justify taking a bike to a dealer for any reason, but that's just me. for others that I have seen it is a time/ convience factor.  they'd rather ride than wrench, so that we leave up to you to decide.  for me riding is a way of life, it's my primary form of transportation, it's a part of me, wrenching is whare the plesure is, making my bike better faster stronger for a lack of better terms.

and just for kicks that 300 cad,  that you will spend at the stealer 275 of that will be labor costs.   or you could spend 20 and buy the manual that I put in the forsale forum and do everything your self.

(poor spellign, sentance structor, and bad punctuation included just for Roadstergal's enjoyment.)

no I am not serious. gee man, do you want a hug? cause if your going to cry I'll ride up there and give you a hug and tell you that I am sorry.
(provided you give me gas money)

and yeah I knew that, that's what makes it funny,  tard. :P

davipu is, shall we say, an "acquired taste".  But he's ridden across the country on his GS (twice!) so he must know what he's talking about....

Seriously, I actually put davipu up for the night once.  He's OK.  A little weird, but OK.

I'd be happy to send you a copy of my 1 hour, 18-minute video that shows you how to check and adjust your valves.  There are currently two copies of it floating around the States in the valve adjusting toolkits (see the who has kerry's valve adjusting kit? thread - currently the top Sticky thread in this forum).  I don't see why someone couldn't ship one of the kits to Ontario, although they'd have to be willing to fill out the customs form and pay a little more than normal for the shipping.

But if you just want to watch the video (which is a Windows Media file on CD) PM me your address and I'll burn you a copy and get it in the mail at lunch time.  For reimbursement costs (as opposed to profit   ) see this post.

Best way to get this up here is to send it via United States Postal Service
Just state on the green label it is a gift from & it will get thru no
problem.
Cuz I want to use it also, if it ever get's up here
We send back the same way...by post

Kerry

Yep, it's truly no big deal:

You'll need to go to the post office anyway to get the package weighed.  The customs forms are right there with all of the other forms.  (Notification of Delivery, etc.)

I've never seen a flappy head react like that.  Must be a mounty or a hockey player.

Hold on!  Just kidding!  Felt the need to rush to davipu's defense.

I love South Park, Cernunos' random country selection (especially Canada, the capital of which is Ottowa), Whistler/Blackcomb, the GS, and this forum.

Kerry, I am fining you $0.01 for unnecessary use of a scanner.  Please send fine via PayPal or by certified check.
