Why do you need to drain the tank?
turn it off at the bottom of the tank, then drain the carb bowls... i would leave the gas in there unless it was bad

If you disconnect the tank you can drain the carbs.

plus if your gas is nasty you dont want to push it down into the carbs

You can drain the float bowls without turning off the tank petcock as long as you're in the ON or REServe postions.  If you turn the petcock to PRIme, then the tank will drain slowly, but  completely.
