After trying to decide which of several cool or funny pictures to use, I just turned on my webcam, took a snapshot and that was that.

Thanks a lot Kerry!
Cheers.

Boy, do _I_ ever feel foolish....

For some reason I started checking the avatars on the first page of this thread.  Every single image hosted by me still had the old Sisna URL.  Grrrr!  :x

On a whim I checked the properties on my own avatar and ... yep, you guessed it.

This made me think of a Christmas play that we did in class in the 4th grade.  I read the main character - a college student living at home, studying to be an "efficiency expert".  He had pushed everyone in the house into buying their presents months early, wrapping them, and stashing them well in advance of the holiday.  As the play goes on, one family member finds that mice have shredded their gift wrapping (in the attic).  Another can't remember where they hid their presents (they eventually find them -- accidentally -- behind the encyclopedia set).  And so forth.

At some point "our hero" realizes to his horror that he never even BOUGHT presents.  Trying to keep his secret he dashes out, on Christmas Eve of course, and ... you get the idea.  It all comes crashing down.

Sigh.

Quote from: KerryFor my $9.95 a month I get not only an ISP but 100 MB of web space.  I'm working on filling it up, but at the moment I've only used 9 MB.

So, if any of you would like to display an avatar next to your posts, but you don't have a place to host it, send me a copy of the image.  I will:

1) Resize it if necessary
2) Upload it to my web space
3) Send you the URL to use in your GStwin.com profile.

Caveat:  I'm a pretty conservative guy, so I reserve the right to NOT host anything crass, obscene, etc.

Are you saying that it only costs you $9.95 a month to host this site?  How much more would it cost you for us to be able to upload pictures?  If it might mean having to have a bigger hard drive on your server I can see what I can scavange from around my office.  We are always buying new computers because I work in the graphics industry and the files we work with are absolutely enormous.  The computers we upgrade from are  too slow for doing what we do but would be sufficient for running a server.

Kerry

Dom,

I don't host the GStwin site - that belongs to John the Benevolent Administrator.   :)

I opened a personal ISP account with Sisna early last year so I could post pictures of my trips and other interesting stuff.  It occurred to me that I could spare some space for avatar images, for those GStwin members who didn't have their own webspace to use.  That account cost me $119.40 / year, only gave me 100MB of space, and was a little on the slow side when FTPing files up and down.

I have since switched to a MUCH better service, offered by EACHosting through our own 1998_GS500.  (See the GSTwin.com Member Webhosting thread.)  It costs me $40 per year ($10 of which go directly to GStwin to help with upkeep costs), gives me 300MB of space, and is more peppy on file transfers.  Gotta love it!

I don't really have the space to allow for wide-open uploads, nor do I have the inclination.  While I would trust most GStwin users to be discrete about what they uploaded, just one bad image would ruin the whole thing.

Anyway, I appreciate the hardware offer even if I can't really take advantage of it.  Thanks!  :thumb:

I thought nobody would ever ask....

He was lifted from the facade of the City Hall building in Pasadena.  My wife and I spent a week there in November.  Given the architecture I figured the building was a church of some kind until I got up close enough to read the words.

Moved to FAQ forum.  (No replies in 2.5 months....)

This is another "new member" topic.  Hopefully folks will check out the FAQ forum shortly after they sign up.  Once they have an avatar they shouldn't need to see this topic every time they go to the General Discussion forum....
