Chain hitting centerstand?

I've been getting some metalic sounding noice when decelerating from any speed above 40. At first I was worried that there's something wrong with the engine since I just recently changed oil and filter on my bike for the first time, but I now think the chain is too loose and is hitting the centerstand when the bike is not accelerating. Does that sound reasonable? Has anyone ever had this problem before?

You probably have 3" of play in the chain...  Mine was danm close to hitting the center-stand and I had about 2.5"...  That's way too much.

Thanks for the instructions roadstergal, I have the Clymer but it didn't have a section about tightening the chain. Not only was my drive chain hitting the centerstand, it was practically laying on it....I'm deffinitly new at bike maintenance so I'm learning as I go along. Now the chain is nice and tight with about 2" of play, problem solved. Once again, thanks for the help everyone.

well not exactly.  the chain should have 20-30mm of slack.  thats .8-1.2 inches.

You really need to keep up on the tension of the chain. Having a really loose chain will wear the sprockets and chain out quicker, and of course, it is very dangerous!

If you ride on a daily basis, check your tension every second day, and apply your chain wax/lube every second day as well.

I know when I need to adjust my chain; it's when I stop feeling the buzzing coming through my right side peg
