my first zen-like ride ...

After having my gs about three months, I decided it was time for some "canyon carving."  I live in Riverside, CA which is in the southern part of cali for those who don't know.  I read on pashnit.com that Highway 243 and the connecting highway 74 and supposed to be beautiful for motorcyclists.  I was not disappointed.  I really learned a lot about my skills and the abilities of my bike today and I think I am now a much better and more confident rider.  I did almost die a couple of times I'm pretty sure when I came into a turn too hot and accidentally crossed the center line by about a foot, luckily no cars opposing.  Anyway, what an awesome ride I highly suggest it to anyone in the area!

If you ever cross the yellows and end up on the radiator of an F-150 Supercrew, it's my wife's.  She rides the center double yellow like it's got magnets in it.

I did almost die a couple of times

funny...i felt the same way too on my first ride in ortega...i was mumbling "im gonna die..im gonna die...so on" while in the turn..ei, it helped me keep my focus

I did almost die a couple of timeswhen I came into a turn too hot

...just set your entrance speed and look as far into the turn..youll be all right

Is Riverside close to Edwards AFB?  My brother is stationed there, and he just bought a Porsche 944.  It'd be cool if I could tell him a couple cool places to drive.  I tried to get him to buy a bike, preferably a GS, but he bought the Porsche instead :dunno: .

When I saw this topic, I thought of the book Twist of the Wrist II, because some of the authors teachings seemed Zen-like. Especially the exansion of ones field of vision. Riding a motorcycle at times feels spiritual to me, epecially when testing my limits and discovering and overcoming my "survival reactions."

When you say 'spiritual' are we talkin' light at the end of the tunnel stuff? :lol:  :lol:  JK!  I haven't read that book, but I agree.  There's something about riding that just builds inner-peace.

About crossing the double yellow, also be sure on left turns that your head and shoulders aren't leaned over the center line.  Your bike may be in the clear but you can still face plant on a bumper.

I don't want to see the "light" after a ride, because that would mean it's my last ride, and there might be pain involved.

I think by spiritual I mean it's kind of "know thyself" thing. Spiritual may have not been the best word, but I feel freedom when I ride, and that feels, well, spiritual.

oppy, in response to your question, tell your brother to go south on the 215 till he gets to the 74 then head east and take that to the 243 north.  he will love it up there, many bikes/performance cars.  yeah i've still got a thing or two to learn, but i swear in the turn when i crossed the yellow line, i was thinking, "yup this is it, this is how i die."  it was kinda sad, but when i did pull out, boy did it feel good!  i guess that's the lifestyle of a 21 year old punk kid with not a care in the world ...

Facio thanks for the route, hopefully my bro won't be there next time you cross the yellow line   .  I'm a little older than you, and I made it cause I learned that everyone gets a limited # of "shoulda died" moments.  Here's to not using 'em all up   .
