Bet you feel pretty cool now hey stunt-master-jack-ass!!!

I dunno...  Am I cold to think they're just asking for it?

I totally missed this thread a week ago. Holy Crap! I really need to get some good boots for riding. I ride in tennis shoes alot. *hangs head in shame*
I was going to ask people to post some pics of some road rash because I am developing a nasty habit of not wearing my jacket. And I need to get over it. I maybe wear it about 60 percent of the time I ride. But then again when it is 101 degrees here in San Antonio like it was yesterday, no jacket seems alright. But then again, Holy Crap!

Convincing enough?

I wear a Fieldsheer Mach 3 mesh jacket, and I've no issues with heat. You can get one on eBay for ~$100, and you can get a Mach 1 for ~$70. The heat of you baking in your gear is better than the heat of the asphalt grind your skin up.

That's evidence enough to get leather gloves in my opinion... The nerve damage and impeded movement is still bothering me, too :(

I can't post the pictures for this one, but it is very very very very very firghtening and traumatic. NOT for the weak of stomach. View at your own risk...

That's better! I don't think any sort of gear would have saved that poor soul from the truck...  :(

My Name Is Dave

Is that link to the guy who is missing his face? I've heard like 8 different stories of how that happened. Regardless of the truth, it's effing nasty. I have had a few nightmares about that picture.  :o

Well, maybe, but maybe not. Those pictures made me lose my appetite today. That's just a frightening thing for anyone to have to see. I'm not squeemish at all, but those pictures irked me. Proper gear might have saved his life. We'll never know.

No, but I saw that one while looking. It was disgusting. I think the one I saw was off Rotten.com, so who knows. That picture is proof you need to wear a helmet.

i'm lost, wtf happened to his ankle? goes from a guy riding down the street back to another biker then some yelling then to leg with foot hanging off. wondering how exactly does that happen?

jomei

My step father was in a really bad accident that totally chopped his leg off a little above the ankle. He was in a cast for 7 months, and then in a wheel chair for a year. They were able to re-attach it. This was in the late 70's, early 80's. He has been riding forever. Was not wearing boots. Not a smart move. Both my parents ride harleys and sportbikes. I was schooled on gear early. I was always told, cover the ankle. It is very rare that I do not.

At about 1:05 you hear one guy say, "It's ok dude, its not that bad" Oh yeah thats comforting. If I saw my foot hanging on by a vein, I imagine myself going through the 5 stages of acceptance of death:

Denial: "This is not happening, I just got that bike 3 months ago"
Anger: "Man I only had liability on my bike too!"
Barganing: "God, please reverse time back 1 minute, I promise Ill be good, and won't wheelie anymore"
Depression: "Man, I never got to show off to the ladies down the street"
Acceptance: "Well, whats happened has happened, now with my 600 trashed I can now get a 1000" *looks down at his foot* "That is going to ruin my weekend" (Tommy Boy)
Squid.

cheesy

i have a bike that does wheelies and stoppies.  even though the bike is capable, I am NOT.  I still have WAY more riding experience that some of the morons I ride with (who stunt..)

It doesn't take SKILL to do that crap.  A used R1, gsxr-1k, zx10, or ANY liter bike will power up in third gear easily.  It doesn't take ANY skill to twist the throttle, nor does it take skill to do stoppies.

Mmmm...  Yeah....  But gear won't help much when you get RUN OVER BY A TRUCK!

At least the guy didn't feel much.

Watch out for cages.  They're sure as heck aren't watching out for you.

As to the photo of the guy without a face, I sure as hell hope he died immediately after that picture was taken.  Modern medicine can repair lots of things, but when you don't have any facial muscle or bone left from your neck to your eyebrows there isn't much they can do.  I saw a lineman hook up to 27kv because he didn't check the line before starting work.  It didn't bother me - much.  As a DOT plow driver I've seen my share of bloody crash messes.  They all leave you wondering "why", but the outcome is always the same:  Somebody isn't going to be home for Christmas - ever.

I'll admit that when I saw that photo it affected me.  Not so much because of the gore, but the idea of STILL BEING ALIVE with such a terrible and unrepairable injury.  The image I come up with is sitting in an emergency room in extreme pain, knowing something is terribly wrong, and not being able to scream because I have no FACE!

Life is too precious to screw up on a motorcycle.  Watch out for the idiots, get schooled, stay alert, be seen, buy the best gear you can afford, wear it, but most importantly: ride conservatively.  The very day you stop getting scared of traffic, worried that you might hurt yourself, or think that you know it all, get off the bike.  You're not thinking rationally anymore and the statistics are going to get you.

I think everyone needs to see photos of terrible injuries like that.  Even if you can't keep your stomach.  Until you see photos like that you have no idea just what can happen.  I wish they would show photos like that to driver's ed students - maybe we wouldn't see so many young lives ruined.  They'll make you a more cautious person.  Just hope you never experience it in person.  Holding somone's brain in while they ask you if they are going to live is something you never want to experience.

Oh...  One other thing.  Modern medicine can reattach limbs, but they can't make them work like new.  If you screw yourself up they can make it liveable, but they can't work miracles.

Remember:  It CAN happen to YOU.  Don't let it.   :o

Ok...  I'll stow the safety vest in my soapbox now.
Every zero you add to the tolerance adds a zero to the price.

If the product "fails" will the product liability insurance pay for the "failure" until it turns 18?
