OK so im pretty new to the bike world and have been learning on a 2004 gs500f with 700miles on it. I just bought it a week ago and gave it an oil and oil filter change. The bike feels so fast and peppy, yeasterday it was runing perfect but today when I fired her up the idle speed was less than 1000rpm. Then whenever I rev up the engine it sort of backfires and pops in the carbs then it revs up normally. When I took it for a spin in the parking lot it would not pick up so I gave it full throtle and it just went up to 20mph and would not go any faster. Do any of you know what might be wrong. Im kind of thinking that there is too much fuel going to the crbs but I dont know. Any suggestions on how to fix this will be great. thanks for taking the time to read this.

Are you letting the bike warm up all the way.  Let it sit for a minute or so with alittle choke on, not so its at 4000 rpm but around 2000rpm.  Then see how it performs.  But also make sure the bike has fuel in the tank.  Looking in there may seem to be plenty but it actually might be hitting reserve, but it sounds more of a warm up problem than low fuel.  Just let it warm up for alittle bit and then ride it.

hi, just to cover the basics...it sounds like you just need to warm it up with choke on for a few minutes before riding.
My hunch was right...Pandy is the biggest Post Whore!

I do warm it up for a while and I lets out alot of smoke and today was no different except when I used the choke it would die out completely or die after I took it off choke. About the gasoline I filled the tank up yesterday with 91octane.

Yo- I am pretty sure you are supposed to fill it up with 87 octane.

No way is that normal.  Both my '00 and '04 were stock, and neither exhibited the symptoms described.  Backfiring is uncombusted fuel hitting a hot exhaust, so it isn't a symptom of lean-ness... (although a lean pop on throttle-off is).

It's under warranty, so go the easy way; take it in and describe the symptoms.

#1. Congrats on your purchase!

#2.  I believe that some light popping through the air filter is normal when the bike is cold.  If I rev mine after first starting when she's dead cold it might pop a bit too.  But once warm it never does it.  Just use the choke for 30-60 seconds to get things warmed up.

#3.  Clouds of smoke are usually not good.  Mine will puff out a couple exhaust puffs of water vapor when I first start it up, but I think that's pretty much normal for any internal combustion engine.  How much oil did you use when you changed the oil?  Are you sure you didn't over/under fill ?

#4. So long as the gas is over 87 octane, you should be fine.  I've run 93 in mine for over 2,000 miles and have never had a problem.  Mine seems to run better on 93 octane rather than on 87/89, so that's what I always use.
Blue 2005 Suzuki M50.  I used to have a GS500F.
