Pilot Powers on a gs500e :)

anyone consider running pilot powers on their gs...

it shows on the michelin website, that they will soon be offering pilot powers in 110/70-17 fronts and 150/60-17 rear...

just wondering if anyone thinks this will be a good combo for the track :D

I'm currently running Metzeler Sportec M1s and I love them. 150/60 out back and the 110/70(or whatever was stock size) up front.  Bike leans in much much quicker and stays where I put her.  Price wasn't bad either, about $180 shipped.  They have about 300 miles on them now with no sign of wear.  Put it like this, I chicken out when cornering well before the tire runs out of grip.

I just fitted my TLR with them.
shhhh....don't tell anyone I had them mounted at a BMW/Ducati/Aprilia dealer....

While there, I was talking to Matt who just ran them on his Aprilia Falco at his last track day. He was really impressed with them on the track. He said they did not feel like a DOT tire but more like a race tire. A while back I rode with a couple them from the shop who had Powers. Praises from all. The traction is more predictable, not like the typical all or nothing with other street tires.

One thing I noticed was how pointy the front tire (120) is compaired to the round Pilot Sports I was running. That should really help with turn in and at lean. They have a unique manufacturing process which makes them more uniform. You can see the sectional mold pattern around the tire. Also, there is not a heavy side mark on them.

If you plan on using a 150 rear, better get a wider wheel.

I'm running Powers right now on my 600rr and they are AMAZING!







I ran dunlop 208zr's first (came on bike)-they are crap;greasy quickly. Then M-1's, better but greasy after 1200 canyon miles. Diablo's next-great great tire. Powers are FAR better than any of them.

you run 150 on back and you'll get the bike 'falling' in to turns once you get to a certain lean angle-not so bad with new tires but as they wear you'll notice it more and the edge where that happens gets sharper. Tire gets pinched a bit making them  more pointy, giving less contact patch at vertical, and making the last 1/4" of the edge unobtainable. You are better off getting a wider rim or smaller tire.

From what everyone is telling me 3-5k. Which is good news since I get about 5k out of Pilot Sports now. The same life but more traction, gotta love it!
Matt said that one of his customers got around 6k out of them but they were really shreaded, probably pushed 1-2k beyond their good life.

Will the PP's be made in a stock size for the GS by chance?   I'm looking into tires now since the current (stock) tires are dry roted and still have the nobs on em...

I have 3 trackdays and NO street time on this set...total of maybe 450 miles. Right side is worn pretty much to the wear bar, left almost as bad (both tracks I do have fast long right sweepers) but center looks showroom new...will have to toss them for my next trackday.

no. Most good sticky tires are made no smaller than 150/60 (no, I dont recommend it on the gs rim) but some are only made as small as 160...

Best bet for a sticky tire in stock (and other useable sizes) is to go with Pirelli Demon Sports...

i am going with the Bridgestone BT-090 tires in the 120-70-17 front and 140-70-17 rear...

the bike is only gonna see track time anyway...

Are those tires on your stock wheels?
What is the widest, best possible combination on the stock GS wheels?

Yeah, I'm running the stock rim.  There was no issue with clearance, but the tire has a more extreme curvature now, this leads to a ride that makes cornering much quicker and in my opinion, easier.

I ran 2 sets of M1's on my R6 loved that tire but it wore really fast I thought.  I have now switched to Pilots and so far I love them. (I only got about 500 miles on them before winter.  I have slicks right now on the GS but after a couple track days I am most likely going to go with Pilots on her.

until it wears a bit, then it will square off about 1/2" from the edge of the tire. Then that 'easier turning' will feel like its falling in...fast! I had a little scare and vowed never to use the 150 again.
