Newb clutch help...

Hi im currently looking at a 1989 GS, buyer says everything runs fine but the clutch may need to be replaced, can anyone tell me how hard of a job this would be or at least how expensive it is or if I should even attempt it.  I've worked on installing clutches in trucks and cars mainly imports, but no bike experience on it yet.

Thats an easy one..
Pick up the phone and call the local stealer..

They should have a set rate for clutch pad replacement..
Based on their hourly rate, you can determine how hard they think the job is..

Since they do it everyday, you can basically triple the time they think its going to take..

Or you can just take it to them and if it gives you any trouble you can hold thier feet to the fire until its fixed..

total mech noob, 6 hours.  can swap one in a import car, 2 hours.  bike mech god 45 minutes.   I can do it in 30.  :mrgreen:

with all parts in hand and rear tire on a brick on kickstand, providing no bolts break or strip on takeing apart and assembly shouldnt take more then 15 mins and thats with old gasket removal

I'd say 2 hours is pushing it.. I've had a good amount of car exp... replaceed clutches in an integra, a cavalier, and a sentra..

Took me maybe 45min-1 hour..  including sanding the metal plates a little..  



here's a tip.. to keep oil from dripping out, get a couple 1x4's and ride the front and rear wheel up on them (stagger them.. and make a little ramp) then when you put the sidestand down it will lean WAAY over.. enough to keep all the oil in the bike
