Ok, might raise some hackles but you bought the sensible bike as your first bike - your next should be one that really gets you excited. Not the speed, not any one aspect, get the one that will make you feel the best when it's sitting in your garage. THe one that will make you feel the best whilst riding it.
That said - I'd get the 750SS, if I had the money and towtruck available to own a Ducati.
Just ride them and see which you like better. If the shop won't let you ride them, go to another shop.

The 650 It is a great bike not too heavy and just the right power and balence and you always have to look at insurence it will be less than the the 1000 so will the sticker price. but again it is up the what gets your blood going.
Good luck

I have not ridden the SV1K yet but if it is anything like my TLR then there really is not an even comparison with a 600. The motors put power down completely different. Also, do not judge a bike by hp numbers alone. What about torque? It is more useful in street riding than hp. Personally I do not like a 600 for the street. But then I do not really like I4's either.

I like big twins.
Common sense in not very common.

im really confused what to buy as my next bike. ive ridden my dads 1200cc sporsters and my ex-girlfriends dads cb1000 (fun bike, but so freaking heavy) so im not scared of wieght or power. i was considering the sv650s but i know its a great bike and all but i dont want to get bored with it 3yrs down the road and then have to buy a new bike. i so tired of not having power at highway speeds. the gs kicks so much ass around town, highway well i feel the lack of power when i go for rides. i mean i not going to buy one for awhile i was just curious on opinions.

the two bikes you mention are completely different, opposite ends of the spectrum. Which one is better is really up to your personal preference, and may be influenced by what kind of riding you do generally (or plan to do with the new bike) and your insurance.

my insurance bases premiums on engine capacity so the sv1000 would cost me much more to insure than a 600ss. BUT most insurance companies will have the 600 higher due to bodywork, etc.

I like inline 4's, I like the sound of a screaming engine, I like to have to rev the snot out of it (although with 75mph first, 90mph second gears I dont have to *really* rev it if I dont want to).

The vtwin has a sound all its own, especially if you uncork the sound with some pipes-its a great sound. the vtwin puts down power in a completely different way. I'd suggest its even a little more user friendly in how it puts power down. better around town? maybe because of how it has more torque down low but my 600 is a pussycat under 8k rpm so it seems easy around town too.

Its really personal preference. Which one gives you a woody? Which one will not only make you giggle to ride it, but will also make you smile when you look over your shoulder when its parked?

Personally I think the sv1000 is blanc-efficient and an excellent bike but bland. if I bought a vtwin liter bike I would choose one of several others before I picked that one. I heard though that you can buy them used for a really good price, especially if you like the copper which isnt selling well. Around here you can pick up a copper sv1k for a few dollars more than an sv50. silver will set you back about $7k. so either way their bargains.

My 600rr cost me $8500.

I'm curious as to why the sv1000 is described as bland and referred to as "a girl's bike" on a lot of forums.  I thought is was sort of in the euro tradition as a sport tourer.

I've been thinking of the SV1000 as my next bike in about a year.  Anyone ridden one who can give me some comments?

I have a cb900, same thing as a cb1000 just 100cc smaller, as long as you can balance you could ride it, they arent scary at all, they dont deliver the power like a sport bike.  First off they are not performance bikes like a sportbike is.  I have ridden my dads vstrom, same engine as the sv1000 just has an over drive as 6th gear.  IT pulls the front wheel of the ground just by twisting the throttle.  Easier to ride then an I4 but still very torqy.  And a 1200cc sportser isnt that fast either, not to dawg on hd, but then are allowed like 1100cc over waht suzuki is allowed in pro stock drage racing and there engines are not derived from any sort of street engine an any of there bikes, the suzukis are, 1500cc max for Suzuki and 2600cc max for HD, so if that doesnt tell you anything about those bikes then I dont know what would.  Get a 600 if anything cause it sounds like it will be your first bike, and also doesnt sound like you have experience a sportbike either.

Three words for you: Triumph Speed Triple.
You can pick up 03 and 04 speed trips for not too much $$, they're gorgeous and have a great compromise in terms of the engine.  Not as wicked in terms of an I4's powerband and not as torquey as the V2, but man alive are they fun.

A friend of mine was thinking of getting an SV1000.  The insurance was cheaper than an SV650.  I think crash stats play into it.

As pantablo said, totally different bikes.  A sport tourer vs. a track bike.  Horsepower isn't everything; where it peaks has a lot to do with the bike's character.  My SV makes peak hp of 60some at about 9K, while a GSX-R makes over 100 at 13,000.  It all depends on what you're using the bike for.  Ride and decide.

My commuter-to-be has less hp than the SV, but it has just gobs of very low-end torque, so it'll be a good commuter.  It wouldn't be a good track bike.

In 3 years you'll be bored with ANY bike that you can safely ride today.  That's just a fact of life.  Whan you first got your GS it was cool, seemed quick, etc.  Now it's boring, slow, uncool.  Same thing will happen with your next bike.

A 600 class bike will be about a 3-10X improvement over the GS as far as FUN and POWER and SPEED are concerned.  They will have "good" power anything above 3K, much better power from 5K, and KILLER power above 8K.

A V-twin will be a better "around town always in the same gear" bike.  Much slower acceleration than an I-4.  And quite frankly, boring to me.

In a few years you'll be bored with the 600 and if you still have your license you can go for a liter bike and lose it for sure.  How about 100MPH in 1st gear...
