Whats up guyz, i have been on this server for a couple days getting info on the suzuki gs 500.  You guyz and gals have a pretty good forum with lots of helpful information.  I found a suzuki gs 500 the other day ago and i put a deposit on it.  Here are the specs:  Its a red 2000 gs500e, Its has the yoshi exhaust, katana rear shock(not sure about front), a front fairing that i have never seen on any other gs, engine guards, lowering links, sv650 mirrors, and it has been rejetted.  The cons is that it has 19k miles on it(which i think i really dont need to worry about), and the gas tank was damaged or something like that, but it has been repaired.  The price is pretty decent though, 1400$.  This will be my first bike, gimme any opinions plz.  Thx

Alwayz glad to see new membaz! (Sorry couldnt help it, the z's were killing me)
You can always fight for a lower price. I know alot of people think that if its running its worth $1,500. I guess I am getting to old but back about 10 -15 years ago it was a dollar per CC was the base for a running bike then condition was taken in to consideration to raise the price some.  Motorcycles are way over priced now. Not only used, but at the dealers. What can you do. (other than walk) With all my rant, the point is it still comes down to what are you willing to pay. I would look at:
Milage: is it highway or city. Small ass bike, most likely city
Condition: is it beat? sounds like the tank is
repair: is the state of repair of such that when you replace the bad, will the value exceed what it will take to buy one in better condition?

But it will always come down to what someone is willing to pay.

Welcome to the list!

I think that's a great price.  Still has plenty of life span left after just 19k.   Plus it has some goodies.  I'd check for visible damage on the tank and anywhere else.... that is what is driving the price down, else he'd be trying to get 2000-2500 for it for a 2000 model

Maybe its a new paint job, or its a 96, but anyway, the tank looks as if it was bondo or something, she said it had a leak a long time ago but she hasnt had any problems out of it, i could just buy another tank couldnt i?.  The bike sounds great with the yoshi pipe,
the price was 1800 but she went down to 1400 so i think its a good deal, lets see so what other mods could i do to this bike after i get it,  maybe a led kit or something, and btw does anybody have a sound or video clip of a gs with the yoshi?

Be careful, a new tank is not cheap!  linky

Trust me I know from personal experiance. linky 2

Since the bike has been repainted, even if you buy a new tank or find one on Ebay or something the paint won't match.  Then if you want it all to match you have to get it ALL repainted.

Check that tank close, mine was repainted, so it looked great on the outside, even looked good when you looked down though the cap.  But it had seroius rust issues. See linky 2.  I would check and see if it has been Kreemed or POR-15ed, just look down in the filler hole and see if it has some kind of coating on it.

Still sounds like a ok deal, thats a 00, so its 10 years newer than mine, but you never know what it has been subjected to in the past.

What did you end up doing? New tank?

I just did the POR 15 thing yesterday (Sat. June 25). What a chore. I added a step from Srinath's playbook between the prescribed POR 15 steps. I plan to update my project post with the details.

don't be worried about that mileage mate, mines a 94 with 39,000 miles on it, and it still goes like stink, regular oil and filter change, regular front sprocket change and a good service now and again, and she'll be good
I never said a thing, it was only a rumour

Dollar per cc ... I believe that must have been in the 80's when A New nitehawk 650 was $1100 ... and so used at $650 was the usual going rate ... making for $1 a cc ... in these days of shiny plastic and chrome wrapped toys that cost an arm and a leg in maintenance and tires and chains forget about what it costs in a crash ... the prices are pushing $10 a cc new ... I see busted (as in crank problems or transmission issues like dropping out of second gear ) go for that $1 a cc ... $1400 is not bad for a running bike with no problems ... and 19K isn't much for a gs if well maintained. Now that tank OK leaking and suddenly stopped etc sounds fishy ... you dont want one that lets go on a rainy sunday night 100 miles from the nearest town. So get that sorted out before you start riding it.
Cool.
Srinath.
