Well i'm back from my little trip. I traveled up the 1 from where it begins near Los Angeles and took it all the way up to San Francisco...hung around there for about 3 days and then rode up all the way to humboldt state park (major redwoods) with a friend on a honda shadow.

As far as luggage goes i strapped on two duffel bags with tie downs...ghetto style. It worked beautifully even at 90+  :o

I went up the avenue of the giants and highway 128...i'd recommend both as they were so beautiful. Especially the 128..it was all redwoods and with the sun glinting in through the trees it was straight out of the movies.

Unfortunately i couldn't take many pics in the really nice places because there was nowhere to stop...i was mostly riding...so these are the mediocre pics.

I came down via the 101 almost exclusively and its really beautiful past marin countyish.. below that its not worth riding as much. Traffic is heavy at times and its mostly farmland(but it sure beats the I-5).

glad you had a good trip, hwy1 is fantastic, finally got out there last fall, can't wait to get back out there again.
P.s. if you want some cheap luggage, I use a set of cycling panniers made by Avenir. they cost me like $35 at a shop, it has 2 pretty large side compartments and a large main pocket on the top. It has 2 elastic straps on the side and a strap in the back that attaches perfectly to the back grab rail. they are a really cheap option, but have worked really well for me.
