the friend i found was a lot of little chunks of magnet, and a trashed up stator.  When i bought the gs the case was damaged from being laid down.  Previous owner welded the case back up, but apparently didn't look at the magnets around the stator.  Anyways, the old one was getting me around 12 volts at 5k rpm with the headlight disconected, new one is gettin 13.6 up to almost 14 with headlight back on at 5k.  Anyone know if this is enough to keep from having dead battery's.  Also what are the magnets around the stator called?  Since they are damaged a bit, if i replaced it would i get higher voltage readings.  Thanks to Dgyver for the stator also.

i took a few pictures if anyone wants to see the damage.  I don't have a place to upload pics, so i can just email them, or if someone wants to host them pm me.  thanks

those are acceptable levels i believe.  also i think the magnets are just called stator magnets... :dunno:

i believe what i had was a minor case of goats, i searched and seen goats's pics and his are a ton worse than what my magnets looked like, so i am hoping mine will be ok.  I plan on changing the oil this weakend and looking at the stator and magnets again to make sure all the bits and pieces are out.  I used q tips and several rags to really get all the grit out

I never saw many chunks in my oil. Most of the magnet and stator parts were inside the stator cover and caught behind the strainer (number 14 in this fiche page) It might be worth your time to drop the oil pan to check it out.

I'm pretty sure that the magnets are a part of the rotor which is the cage looking assembly on the crankshaft. The stator is the laquered coils screwed to the case cover. (parts 2 and 1, respectively on this fiche page)

Those voltage levels should be fine.

so when the magnets were trashed on yours, what parts did you replace?

On mine I swapped staror and rotor - both were trashed, then oil and filter changes every 10 miles 2-3 times then a couple more at 500 miles ... and take out the pump screen and clean it as well ...

I did a complete rebuild. It was a lot more cleaning and elbow grease than replacing stuff. Other than gaskets, I replaced all the bearings, the piston rings, the stator and the rotor.

It took me a while becuase I didn't have a whole lot of free time when it broke. A month or two, but I tried rejetting at the same time. More than two months, as I recall.
