choke cable all the sudden too short?!

I removed my forward controls to paint my bars, and upon re-assembly my choke cable has mystically shortened itself.

I think I'm putting it together properly... inserting the cable into the choke lever, then the groove in the lever seems to line up inside of the casing.





any ideas why this would happen?

The problem may be at the lower end of the cable.  See if this thread helps.
