Are any of you heathen geeks into Harry Potter?

I'm talking the books, here.

I just found out that Bloomsbury sells "adult" editions that have a different cover - so that adults don't look like they're reading kids' books on the train, I guess.

my sister-in-law (who has now read the new book twice, she had read it once by noon on saturday) always gets the children's edition cause the covers are cooler.  she usually gets a copy from Canada so she can have the brit version.

i usually get by borrowing the books from various family members.

I have all hard covers with the childrens book cover.  When they are in the shelf the covers are on but when i read them i take the covers off.  Not cause i am embarassed but because i don't want to f' them up.

The books are great fun.  A good children's book is one you never get tired of reading; I still bust out with Wind in the Willows and The Phantom Tollbooth now and then.  HP is the same.  Although...

I really got the feeling that she's getting a little tired of the series and Potter-dom with HBP.  It felt overly-quickly written, like she took lumps of plot and strung them together.  And the heavy emphasis on Who's Dating Who was odd.

I'm very curious to see what happens with Snape.  One of the best characters in the books, and what he did in this one seems oddly anomalous in light of what happened in the last 5.  I hope it's not the case, but maybe she's just bent on making a big pile of chaos to pull a satisfying ending out of for Book 7, and to heck with wrapping up the loose ends.

Piers Anthony ive found to be my most liked

I read the first couple and wasn't horribly impressed -- I was glad they were getting kids who never read to actually pick up a book, but I didn't think they were horribly well written or interesting.  I felt there were plenty of genuinely *good* books out there that deserved the attention.  I'll refrain from reciting my prepared 'back in my day...' speech.  :)

I'm also not a big fan of the non-book branches of the Harry Potter conglomerate.

I read the fourth one Wednesday and I'm mostly through the fifth one -- either they've gotten a lot better or I've become a lot more forgiving.  I'm really enjoying these.

There's something that has annoyed me right from the start, though -- time and time again, Harry and his friends have ended up in situations which could have been solved by speaking with a trusted adult...  But they never seem to do it.  Sometimes Harry had an excuse, most of the time he didn't.  It's fine to promote self-reliance (and I realize the story is much more exciting this way) but it got pretty silly at times.

Okay, I'm all done venting.  :)

Edit:  Luckily I missed the spoiler in this thread, I'd be pretty annoyed if I read it by accident.  Should maybe a moderator (or the thread creator) edit the thread title if people are going to discuss the new book?

I read the new one in two days. I agree, compared to her 800+ page goblet of fire, this was VERY VERY short. I was sooo sorry that it was over, and i too noticed it seemed to have less of an emphasis on his schooling, and plot, though I guess that could be building up to the final novel.

I'm not going to spoil any ending, but a few days ago the local big alternative radio station (not a clear channel one) had a guest call-in accidentally spoil the ending of the new book. You could almost see the faces of the jocks through the radio  :o not that they really cared but they knew they'd have to deal with lots of callers since they are listened to pretty heavily here and across the country via internet. I guess they decided to play it off and kept announcing the ending every commercial break and between songs. I must have heard their spoiler commercial at least 40 times over the course of the day.

I dont know why I just told that story, but I thought it was pretty funny. And they did have quite a few callers that were a bit pissed off to say the least.   In a related story, I did read from a newsroom website some guy committed suicide because he heard a spoiler in the line at the supermarket. Yikes.... :? I guess they are good books and all, but some people I just don't understand.

In a world where Howard Stern can be fined six figures for using naughty language, I find it a bit tough to believe a radio show's producer / jocks didn't have delay buttons within arms reach.  Have you considered that perhaps they were just pricks?  :)

HOLY CRAP.

Roadstergal, I almost gouged my eyes out.

I thought you wrote, 'Snape has the suicide;' -- I was CERTAIN you gave away something in the most recent book.  It's decided, I'm not going to come back to this thread until I've finished the most recent book.
