Do you pull over to help?

I'm sure there's been a thread about this before, but this is mine... So deal with it!

A few months back (before the GS) there was a kid on the shoulder of I-90, right after the 405 interchange...  He was standing dangerously close to traffic and waving his arms trying get someone to pull over...  I crossed over 3 lanes of traffic as fast as I could to see what the deal was (and to get him AWAY from the 65 MPH cars)...  Turns out he ran out of gas.  I drove him to the closest gas station to buy a gas can and fill it.  Then to a different gas station, since the first one didn't have cans.  Then I drove him back to his car and waited around until he got gas in it and started it...  Made me late for a date with my wife, but she understood.

Then on Wednesday I was driving to work (I was driving 'cause the GS was getting new rubber) and saw a guy next to his moto on the side of the I-90 4th ave off-ramp.  The first thing I did was try to figure out how to get over to him without causing an accident...  I managed to make it over and asked if he needed help with something.  Turned out that he had a flat tire and a can of Fix-A-Flat...  and didn't want a ride anywhere...  So, there wasn't much I could do there.  BUT!  He didn't have a phone...  I lent him my phone to call a few people and try to arrange someone to pick him up...  It made me late to work, but since I'm late a lot anyway I didn't really care.

If I can pull over, I usually do pull over...  Maybe it's because I've been stuck on the side of the road a few times and no one stopped to help me out.  Maybe I just like being late.

Anyone else make a habit of pulling over to help people out?

Yep.  I drove a guy in Canada to a gas station when he had run out of gas, and he and his wife were debating who would sit with the car and who would walk.  I pulled over late one night for a gal by the side of the road - as it turns out, she had dropped a lit cigarette under her seat, but had proceeded to slosh her Big Gulp under there, and was confident it was out.     In West Seattle, again, at night, I pulled over for a girl who was waving to cars for a ride; she told me as she got in that she had her paycheck in cash on her, and therefore didn't want to ride the bus.   :o

I think pulling over to help is just the right thing to do...

and yes I pull over for people when I can.
If I don't who else will?

I've pulled over to help on several occasions. Both while riding and driving. A few times I pulled over even when there are others already helping.
I know if I needed it, somebody better pull their ass over and help me dammit!!

There was a time, I was driving locally and came to slower traffic where there usually isn't any. I saw a few cars stopped on the side and in a parking lot. As I slowly drove along I noticed something in the road. As I drove around it, I realized it was a body. I immediately pulled to the side, called the police, knowing others prob called already. I got my flashlight and ran in the road to move traffic away from the scene. Some kid was driving fast at night and struck a woman crossing the road. She was killed instantly(I was told) and not in one piece. We made sure the driver didn't leave, in case he was drunk or something. I couldn't sleep for days with the thoughts of that poor woman lying on the road. I hoped she didn't feel any pain.
2 days later at work I tell a coworker about it. It turns out the woman was a friend of hers, on her way home. She thanked me repeatedly for stopping, even though there was really nothing I could do to help. At that moment I knew why I had to stop and why I would do it again.

I still place a rose at her memorial on the side of the road a couple of times a year.

Yeah I stop all the time to help people.  Have changed many a tires for people either to old to do it or who just didn't know how to.  Given many rides to people who have run out of gas.  And stop if I see a car on the side of the road just to see if there is anything to help with.  Also know to help small animals like turtles accross the road.  I guess i just like to do what I can so that maybe i can make someones day a little brighter.

Oh forgot to mention that one time i waved an elderly lady down who didn't know she was driving on a flat tire.  I changed it for her but while i was doing it she turned around and signalled to my girlfriend at the time that I had a nice butt.  After i was sure that the lady was all set up I went back to the car and my girlfriend was telling me what she was doing.  I was shocked that a 80-90 year old woman would do that, but also laughed the whole way home.

I almost always stop to help, if no one else has already stopped.  The only time I don't is if the situation seems like it might be unsafe for me (female usually traveling alone).

The last motorcyclist I stopped for was on a battered Gixxer 750 with a spray painted tank and no fairings.  The bike had just quit on him.  He ended up borrowing my cell phone to call a friend to pick him up.

Once I gave a ride home to a woman whose car had broken down right in front of my house.  I thought it was just her but when we went outside to get into the car she called her 6(!) children over from her broken-down car.
So I stacked them like cordwood into my old Celica and drove them the 10  miles home   .

She offered me money but I declined and told her that if she wanted to repay me she could stop to help next time she sees someone  broken down. I usually say this if they try to give me something for stopping, I think it helps keep the good karma rolling....

I stopped once to help someone change a flat, turned out she was a masseuse and she gave a gift certificate for a session with her.   :thumb:  :thumb:

now thats a deal.  when i had my truck i would always carry a tow rope with me.  on a few occasions i helped people out of ditches.

now when i crashed my bike there were no good samaritans.  sure i was with 2 people but they had bikes too.  i  was just laying there all bloody on the side of the road trying to get my senses back.  8 cars went by before someone stopped.  they all just drove around the bikes.  i was appalled.

karma bitches.

I don't stop on the interstate. It's usually too hard to come down from 70mph to stop within a reasonable distance past the person. Plus, the state has these special vehicles that drive up and down the highway looking for people to help.

If I'm out in the rural twisties, though, I do stop and offer to help.
