Is the starter gear not engaing? I don't know how to test for that.

What about valves? When was your last valve adjustment?

If the valves are too tight when cold then maybe it's not building up enough compression.

Quote from: 97gs500eI went by the local suzuki dealer to leave it for their service dept today, but they said they're two weeks backed up.  So I want to fix the bike myself..

This morning it would only start on a push-start, but its starts fine if the engine's hot.   But the engine doesn't want to turn over, when it's cool.

Whats causing this?  Any ideas?

a weak spark it does sound like, therfore i would run a search on the thread to do electrical amp and volt tests, there are plenty to look at, and its too much to retype

but thats what it sounds like to me.  check to see if battery is getting the correct charge by useing a meter on it, if it is generating around 13/14 volts its should be fine, if its going high above 15 then the regulator rectifier is buggered, if its low then look at the generator side of things, and use new plugs as well

dude, seriously read the thread.

I have new plugs and a new battery.  I installed them myself - they're good.

I would go back to what was causing the problem to start with. Maybe there is more junk clogging up the carbs. Trash in the tank maybe? Try cleaning them out again.

if it push starts everytime then its not the carbs or the valves or the spark.

is the motor spinning when your starting it? id look there maybe the starter teeth are messed up or its not engaging the motor/ flywheel.

sorry missed it, less the attitude, no need for that crap,i have been posting to half a dozen bike forums and i just happened to slip up, is it a crime or what?    It still could be a weak spark, it aint the spark plug that makes the spark its just there to transfer the spark, after you have tried firing it up without success then pull a plug see if its dry, or see if its wet, if its wet it aint sparking right, doesnt mean its the plugs
