Well,  between an attempted inspection of my bike yesterday and the opinions of some motorcycle friends at work, it looks like my '93 GS needs the following items:

new front tire
chain
at least front sprocket
fork rebuild and new springs (gook on the tubes, could be blown seals)
rear shock

I knew the suspension was a bit floppy when I bought it last year but have been putting off dealing with it, but it's deteriorated since I bought it (I need to lose weight!) and is bottoming out on bad roads.

All I can say is thank god for this board - I've spent most of last night researching this and rather than pay the insane amount of money it would cost me at a dealer I'm going to tackle it myself (all except the mounting of the tire).

I used to do a lot of my own work on my older cars back when I was broke and had more time and less money, but as they've gotten more complicated and I've had less time and more money I've just had someone else take care of it.

Time to get back to my roots  .

don't worry the gs is a lot less complicated than you think, the original gs design dates back to the mid 70's.

other than putting new rubber on, all the things you have listed are very simple.  Between the forum, how-to, Pablo's site and Kerry's site, there are good write-ups and tips on all the jobs you need to do.

Good luck!

new shoes arent that bad but dont get in a hurry putting them on . i took a razor knife and some dikes and cut the old tire off saved time and effort, you just need the dikes to cut the wire in the seal. Soap up the new rubber reall good and keep a spray bottle of soapy water and get after it just dont get in too a hurry. i used to hate changing tires, but now i change my buddies for 25 bucks a tired and it takes me about 30 mins per tire
