where the freak is the filter located???

Front of the engine, between the exhaust pipes before they turn rearward, under the cover that's held by three 8mm cap nuts.

BikeBandit.com has this schematic that shows what you'll find when you remove the oil filter cover. It's doubly handy to see what things will cost if you loose or (God forbid) break a part.

When you put it back together, make sure to put some grease in the trough that holds the O-Ring.  The grease will help keep the ring in place when you button up the cover, and provides extra sealing so you don't drip afterwards.

Have fun...

and DONT overtighten the three bolts holding the cover on. they snap easily. my site has a way to fix it if you do snap one.

Yes, do read that. I wasted a lot of time during my first oil change by not changing out the o-ring, not using the white lithium greese, and not cleaning the mating surfaces thoroughly. It made a mess too. Not fun.

Doing it right the second time was easy and quick and, no leaky.

one other tip -- don't forget to tighten the drain bolt on the bottom of the engine, even if you have drained and re-filled the oil three times to get the o-ring to seal properly...

it can be quite inconvenient...

don't ask me how I know this...

you don't spray the forks/fender/front of the motor with warm oil if you empty the pan first ;) the drain plug is in the center of the oil pan, under the motor.

I suppose you could stretch it out a bit (4,000 miles?  5,000 miles?) but I never did when I was running synthetic.  Which is the main reason that I eventually went back to a less expensive blend.

If you have a '96-'00 model, this post will give you a good start on the front pads.  (Sorry about the filthy caliper.)

For the rear pads on any model year, go to this FAQ thread and do a Ctrl-F search for "rear brake pads".
