Does anyone know the difference between an engine numbered 1501 ans one numbered 1502?

Probably not alot, other than the time that it was manufactured, and considering they are sequential, one is a little newer than the other.

Scratch is correct in my view, 1502 came down the line 30 secs after 1501. If you have engine no 1501/2 its gotta be one of the first ones.

How do you find the engine #?

It will be stamped into the casing somewhere, dunno exactly where but someone will. It should match the frame no, if it dont someones been chopping and changing in the past.

I think you're referring to the VIN.

No I am not, the VIN includes the engine and frame numbers but also include other info such as date of manufacture and original country of sale, its on a plate riveted to the frame. The frame number is stamped onto the R/H side of the headstock and the engine number is stamped on the R/H side of the engine casing to the left and above the oil filler.

Bikes in the USA do not have the riveted plate on the right side of the frame at the steering head.

bikes in usa have a 17 digit number stamped into the right side of the steering tube
also normally on a tin foil sticker on the left side of the bike...federal info and the VIN repeated(same as steering tube)
the engine number is stamped on the (for a GS) the right side near the oil filler plug

the engine # and the frame # don't normally match on modern bikes from what I have seen
on most bikes in the last few years.... the Dept. of Motor Vehicles has a cross referenced data base of frame #'s and engine #'s
and some states require you to bring in the new engine # to check/add to their database

yes, they can tell that you have a hot engine in your bike IF they run the info through their database.

It sounds like a similar setup. I will check my numbers when I get home tonight and post any differences. The VIN no is recorded on our Registration documents also, and the Police have instant access to the information. Its not unknown for the Cops here to pull you over and check the engine, frame and registration all numbers tie-up with the VIN number. The registration number stays with the bike for its life and is not transferred when its sold on. If the numbers dont match you have some serious explaining to do to the Boys in Blue
