Someone just stole my GS! (San Francisco)

My housemates and I just got home around 2:45am.  I walked past my bike coming into the house, ate some cereal, went to bed.  At around 3:00, one of them comes in and tells me she heard a bike start up under the window and now she can't see mine.  Sure enough, I look outside and it's gone.  Called the police and all that, but now I'm posting here since maybe one of you bay area folks might see it.

It's a pretty distinctive GS.  It's black with a red and white stripe down the tank.  It has a tallish windshield (looks dumb, but I have a long commute) and a homemade luggage rack made from EMC.  I never got a chance to paint it, so it's kinda rusty around where the welds are.  There's also a map holder thingy strapped to the tank, and a left fork seal is leaky.

Identifying numbers:
Plate: 14J6253
VIN: JS1GM51A8M2102111
Engine: M501124282

If you find it and you have it in your presence, please call 911 and report it immediately.  If you see it around but can't call right away, call SFPD's non-emergency number, (415) 553-0123, instead.  My police report number is 050-861-125.  Once you've done that, feel free to call me at 415-355-0815, or 707-237-6225.

Motorcycle thieves suck.  Time to get some sleep...

What security did you have on the bike? That must suck seeing your bike then 15mins latter it's gone.

dgyver

That really sucks. Post some pics if you have them so if we see any parts for sale or on ebay.
Common sense in not very common.

...
just curious: did you lock handlebars? did you take key out? any other kind of locking device used?

I just want to know if the GS is an easy prey  :dunno:
Caturday yet?

pandy

Sorry to hear this.  :(

Your best bet is to chain the bike to something secure  like a lamp post or ground anchor.

Unfortunately, yes, the GS is easy prey. Locking the handlebars is conveinient, as it uses the same lock for both the ignition as well as the lock; add a padlock and detach the battery and you might only get a smashed ignition.

I will keep my eye out down here. Did you post it on the BayAreaRidersForum.com theft database?
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

good judgement trumps good skills every time.

that sucks man i wouldnt wish that on anybody. Are they really this easy to steal?

pandy

Unfortunately, there isn't really anything to chain my bike to at work, but I am able to park it in a spot that's hidden from the streets. Also, my office isn't too far from the parking lot, so I could go out and kick some boo-tay if the remote for the alarm went off (and don't think 5'4" moi couldn't keek some boo-tay if someone was messin' with my bike!  :P ).

I worry about catching someone messing with my bike, because I'd probably end up in jail afterwards.

So what did you have on your bike?  Alarm(which I doubt), locked handle bars, anything?  Pic?
02 gs500e, V&H exhaust, 3600 miles, first mod...BobB's ignition advancer!

Any others from MA wanna ride??

I don't have any recent pics that show all the stuff I've added to it.  There's this pic from when I bought it, though:

I had a disc lock on it, and the ignition was locked as well.  The fork lock didn't work anymore, but I'm sure they just jammed a screwdriver into the ignition and broke it, so it wouldn't have mattered if it worked or not.

If I get it back, I'm adding an alarm, and maybe a hidden kill switch someplace so that it's really hard to start.  I'm also getting a higher quality disc lock.  I'd lock it to a pole if there was a convenient one around here, but I don't think there is.  I'll look, though.

Thanks, everyone, for all the kind words.  :)

Sorry to hear it - I'll keep an eye out in East Bay for you.  Always thought my GS was safe because there are more expensive bikes out there, but I guess I"ll be extra careful now.  Hope you get it back!
