Hi,

I'm having a problem with my GS. Its my fault. The bike started making an odd rattling sound the other day. At about 4k revs the metallic rattling starts, by 6k revs or abouts it stops (or at least its drowned out). First thing I did was check the oil and it was REALLY low. Dumbass. I hadn't checked it in a while. Anyway I topped the oil up and the sounds a *tiny* bit better, but still there.

Can anyone tell me what this might be? I posted a short vid of the sound on another bike forum. Here's the link: http://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=56233

Some people on there told me it might be the cam chain tensioner? what do you guys think? if it is the CCT, is this easy to strip and clean? can anyoen give me specific advice on how to do this? The bike is up for sale at present and I need to get this noise to stop!!

thanks alot,
james

I think that if it is the cam chain tensioner the noise will be quite regular and clock like.  I have an intermitent noise on my bike that I can hear with a full face helmet on. It has been there since I got the bike (an 89) and doesn't seem to have any adverse effect. I am leaving it alone till I chnage the cam chain tensioner itself.
Hope that helps a bit.........

Check if everything on the bike is snug fit. I once had a rattle around 5K rpm, turned out to be the Suzuki crash bars that were ripping off at the mounting points   . So far for OEM crash bars.....
