Books or articles to help me undestand some things

Can anybody recomend books/ articles that would help me understand engine modification better.  I understand a little as my car is heavily modified.  I am looking for information on things like big bore kits , head milling exc and how it affects compression.  what is the compression ratio for the gs by the way?

My factory manual covers years 89 - 99 and specifies 9.0 : 1.

I assume the remaing years are the same. :dunno:
